re: I can't stand Naji Marshall. I don't care if it is Summer League.

His defense is not that good, it just looks good on TV because he makes hustle plays, but his footwork in a halfcourt is mediocre at best.
Not true. Naji may be rather useless on the offensive end, but he's a quality defender, and he's very solid on-ball.
I can't believe that this thread got as much support as it did. Naji clearly provides outsized value for a minimum-contract player.
Last season, Naji spent the first half of the season sharing the floor with Temple, Sato, Kira, NAW, and Jaxson (at center). It would have been very hard for anyone to look good playing with that crew.

OMG
Naji is pure trash whatever way you want to slice or dice it
Give up

If that's the logic you're doing, you can say that for any of those guys having to play with Naji.

If you want something objective, how about if we look at how Naji fared last season in impact metrics? Remember that LEBRON from B-Ball Index and RAPTOR from 538 both try to use advanced stats combined with +/- data to estimate the total number of points per 100 possessions a player's presence on the court created.
LEBRON is "luck-assisted," meaning that they do things like adjust a player's +/- by not rewarding him for his teammates making free throws or penalizing him his teammates missing free throws, because how well teammates make free throws while he's on the court affects +/- but really says nothing about his quality of play.
RAPTOR isn't luck-adjusted, but what it does is use advanced player tracking data. For example, it adjusts a player's defensive rating based on how well opponents shoot when that player is the closest defender.
In any case, a score of 0.0 in both would mean someone is an average NBA player, while -2.8 is defined as the value of a replacement player (say, from the G-League).
Naji had a LEBRON of -0.44 and a RAPTOR score of -0.7. Those are quality scores for a player on a minimum salary. That's a better LEBRON score than Trey and Nance, and Naji's RAPTOR is only slightly worse than Graham (-0.6) and Trey (-0.5). Kira was significantly worse in both metrics.
The only player, though, who truly was worse than a replacement player in both metrics was Garrett Temple.

This is wild.

Too much recency bias here - blasting a guy because of how bad of a summer league player he is is kind of goofy.
Naji was in the bench rotation throughout our playoff series and didn't try any heroball. He hustled for loose balls, played decent defense, had a few breakaway dunks, and only was in for around 10-12 minutes a game. We could do much worse for that amount of playing time. I care much more about the player he was the last 20 games of the regular season and the playoffs rather than the moronic stuff he does during summer league, and that early season wanna be Kobe phase.
I like what he brings to the table off the bench for a few minutes a game. In the starting lineup, as a focal point of the offense, he's terrible....but that only happens in summer league so who cares.

He did calm things down in the playoffs and played a good role. There were several times during the season that be shot an absurd amount of shots in a short amount of time trying to play hero ball. If he stuck to the playoff version of himself it would be ok, but this isn’t recency bias. Only judging his playoff minutes is recency bias.

Naji is just a guy to me that is hurt by Summer League, or at least how we allow him to play.
He should be exclusively focused on defense, secondary ball movement, cutting, and improving his shooting.
That's it.
He should not be initiating offense, running Iso's, trying to emulate Kobe/Jordan. Even late last year bad Naji was still coming out too frequently IMO.

Summer League should be where you work on the things you need to get better at for the NBA squad. Like those things for Naji.
Trey for example, mostly a spot up shooter for now in the NBA, but he's a dude you want initiating more to work on that part of his game. Naji will never be that in the NBA, so he should never do that in SL

Naji played well in SL last year and everyone was excited about him. If you recall, the Pels were a very good SL team and sucked come reg season. I don't think there is a correlation, but overreacting to SL is stupid.

I despise Naji, I hate watching him play.

I’d much rather get rid of him than Temple or even Graham. Addition by subtraction.
