What makes you think he'll want to sign a new 5-year extension if we are still a 30 win team at that time in 2016?

Maybe you should go lay down and take a nap.

Math. You have 2 choices to make. Choice A is 1 year $9 million, which if you survive uninjured someone will give you somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 years $60 million. So a total 5 years, $69 million, with the first year you take on the risk of career threatening injury keeping the 4/$60 from ever coming. Choice B is 5 years at roughly $95 million, and if you get injured in year 1 you still collect all $95 million.

So, AD doesn't have the liberty to testing the free agent market after his rookie deal has expired?

We have absolutely no cap space to make moves to attract fee agents.

The Free Agents are on the team.

The core of this team are all under 25 and all under contract for 3-4 more years.

It's all about this team growing together.

FWIW, I truly believe this team would be over .500 if healthy.

The PG situation after Jrue went down has wrecked this season.

I've been to Hammond enough times to know I'd be angry all the time too.

He'll be a Restricted Free Agent.

He either takes a one year qualifying offer and then becomes Unrestricted, or he signs the max deal that ONLY WE can offer him.

No player that I am aware of has ever turned down the max to take the QO. Ever.

They take the deal to get max money...then request a trade 2 years later.

Always how it works. Learn about the league.

He'd have to take option A for him to be an unrestrictive free agent.

You'll get shunned for posting anything about Davis leaving

For some reason it is just viewed as an absolute impossibility by this board

Even though Demps has proven he can't build a team that can make the playoffs, Davis will just sign here just...cause

I get that it will be a long time before this is an issue, but for some reason it's just unthinkable that a superstar player would want to leave a small market team with basically zero playoff success

This is how you do learn by throwing wrong shite out there and have somebody corect you. I didn't realize he'll be Restricted. Thanks for the mini-front office NBA education

No one has ever said he won't want to leave eventually.

Just that he won't within the next 5 years, and if we are competitive by then, we probably have him for at least the next 7.

After that its not worth predicting at this point.

Maybe because no rookie has ever turned down a max deal from their home team.

Kyrie is currently bitching about the Cavs, but no way is he going to walk away from 5 yr 95 mil.

thank god for that

at least they will always be relatively fun to watch in that period, regardless of the team around him

This is how we were lucky enough to keep Eric Gordon.

His next contract after that, he would be Unrestricted. So we likely have him for at least 5 or as many as 7.

That's a long time to get your shite together. But not forever, as Minny is about to find out with KLove.

He has the liberty, but it isn't free. It will cost him at a minimum of $25 million, and possibly as much as $85 million if he gets injured during his "I hate the Pelicans so much I'm not signing this contract offer for 5/$95 but will instead sign for 1/$9 and hope I don't get injured before someone offers me $25 million less total than I could have had this day if I didn't hate the Pelicans so much " season of protest.

It's called RESTRICTED Free Agency. It makes the conditions very favorable for the home team to keep their own rookie.

Hey ATL do you know when did the restricted FA for rookies thing start happening in the league? The 90s?

That was a damn good idea by the league

Looks like the 98-99 lockout LINK I'm sure Shaq leaving the Magic after 4 years played a part. That might also be where a lot of this misunderstanding is coming from if this is the first time some people have paid much attention to the team since Shaq.
