Draft Combine Starts Next Week...Sort Of?
quote:

Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn 17m

NBA has made official its plan for a draft combine to be conducted in both team markets and virtually, beginning September 28 through early-to-mid November.

Yeah I just saw this tweet and I don’t even understand what this actually entails or the logistics.

It would be nice to have a HC on board evaluating draft prospects with the scouts.

It means they'll be playing 2K and teams will be seeing how they go

NBA Draft Combine 2020 will give players the opportunity to participate in league and team interviews, both conducted via videoconference from Sept. 28 through Oct. 16. Players will also take part in an individual on-court program consisting of strength and agility testing, anthropometric measurements, shooting drills and a “Pro Day” video, all conducted in October at the NBA team facility nearest to a player’s home or interim residence. Medical testing and examinations will be performed by NBA-affiliated physicians in the same market.

Additionally, the NBA has expanded its use of “Combine HQ,” an online tool developed by Fusion Sport in its software platform Smartabase. An interactive online platform, Combine HQ provides NBA teams with a one-stop shop for scouting information gathered during the on-court portions of this year’s Combine. Using Combine HQ, NBA teams and scouts will be able to compare participating players to their peers, past Combine participants and current NBA players, and view detailed shot charts and statistics.

Question:

Should we approach draft picks from here on out as future trade bait?

In other words, should we be picking guys that are ultra athletes with the highest ceilings hoping we just hit on one, so we can trade them in the future for a superstar, instead of worrying about how they fit with us?

I think we take a balanced approach between fit/ ceiling.

I wouldn't be surprised if we make any trades before the draft that could sway a certain pick due to position.

Should everything you do be geared towards getting that third star next to Zion and BI? If so you have to shoot for ceilings right? Or “perceived ceiling” I should say.

You also need guys that fit enough to play and develop though. Like another 6’5 combo guard would have problems getting minutes unless he was starter good, where Jaxon got minutes when you hadn’t planned on it.

Depends on what you mean by 3rd star.

I think its more likely most our picks turn into roll players > "the 3rd star" and regardless its all a guess.

We need to field a solid team and then use the draft to build around that. If we have a plan to move a pick then yes you take ceiling, the pick they want, or trade the pick.

If we trade Lonzo, JJ, NAW we probably pick a 1-3. If we trade Hayes, Miller, Melli then we pick a 5 or 3.

My guess is that we draft best fit and its a C, SF, or PG

You draft and develop properly, the value of the players will be there. We need to continue to draft like we have since Langdon and Co came on board. For example, Guys like NAW have the skillset to be a high value asset. If they can develop NAW to play as well as he does during the scrimmages, you have a great asset/player.

You never draft just on fit. Just b/c we need a PG doesn’t mean that’s what you draft no matter what. You draft the guy that you think has the highest chance to succeed in your organization.
If that’s another 5, then so be it. You don’t not draft a center just b/c you drafted Hayes last year. If he’s the guy you like the best when it’s your turn to pick, then pick him.
