I'd rather grab a 2nd rounder in the draft and get Patric Young.

Now that's a Big fricker who could make problems for opposing teams in the post

He's beefy, but he's not that big. Looking at combine measurements, wingspan, reach, etc. he's probably closest physically to Carl Landry or a bulkier Lou Amundson. He's also a rookie and Withey just showed us that not even playing defense for 4 years at a high level in college can help you crack Monty's rotation. I'm not opposed to taking a flyer on Young if we buy or acquire a pick, but he wouldn't be much help for the upcoming season.

82games.com says he played almost exclusively at center last year, and he's never made more than $1 million in 5 years in the league.

Good info. Guess I could have looked that up before commenting, but I would have thought he made more than that after his Spurs days just off of that.

Just looking at his salary, I think he played 4 years on his "rookie contract" and being a 2nd rounder you pretty much make minimum wage. Then he became a UFA and Dallas gave him minimum wage.

Why is everyone so high on him? As a 2nd rounder, I would be OK with him, but it seems everyone wants him. I think he is a long shot project at best in the NBA.

You mean if I told you that you could draft Lou Amundson with an extra 30 pounds of muscle, you wouldn't be excited and think there was an outside shot that you just filled the starting center position with a 2nd round pick? I think he'll be a fine rotation player, but yeah, some people seem excited about an end of rotation player.

It's the same thing as with Darius Miller I guess, and I'm one who was more optimistic than I should have been with him. Since our needs at the position are fairly limited, it's not inconceivable that a cheap role player could be the answer. That's where the excitement comes from, these guys are like scratch offs, probably a break even proposition at best, but you still could win $100,000.

Amundson is exactly who comes to mind when I think of Young. As long as some see that as our expectation for him, that is fine. But I agree with you that some see him as much more and that is where I am a bit confused.
