Some interesting tweets from David Fisher of TBW. I haven't had time to dig any deeper see if these are schedule improvements, but the open 3 Point Attempts being greatly reduced gives you hope they've at least partially fixed something that really needed fixing.

David Fisher @Fish_TBW 4h

Since the All-Star break the Pelicans have been 7th in the league in DRtg. But the bottom fell out for the offense (they're 17th).

WHY has the bottom fell out?

Lonzo Ball came back down to earth. He's shooting 35.1% from behind the arc post-ASB.

Eric Bledsoe cratered. He's shooting 29.4% on 136 attempts behind the arc.

In that span Hart missed 16 games.

NAW missed 14. (He's been the best shooter on the team behind the arc in this span)

Lonzo missed 11.

Ingram missed 5.

Zion missed 3.

What's going on with the defense?

Opponents Wide Open 3's
Pre-ASB: 21.1 3PA/Game, 40.2% 3P%
Post-ASB: 16.2 3PA/Game, 36.2% 3P%

A little shooting luck and a lot running teams off the three point line more often.

Pelicans went from 29th to 15th at allowing wide open 3's.

Pelicans Defensive Rating

Pre-ASB: 116.3
Post-ASB: 110.0

Pelicans Wide Open 3PM Allowed

Pre-ASB: 8.5/Gm = 25.5 PPG
Post-ASB: 5.8/Gm = 17.4 PPG

When SVG talks about the team becoming more consistent, it's probably because their internal metrics say they're defending now.

Interesting. I think Naji and Hayes getting more run has probably resulted in opponents getting fewer wide open 3’s. Wes Iwundu and James Johnson also got some minutes and they play pretty sticky defense as well.

Zion going from an absolute defensive liability to pretty neutral is definitely a huge help.

Christian Clark tweet:

Pelicans played 17 games in April. They went 7-10. They have the 6th-ranked defense this month. 28th-ranked offense, though.

It's Naji's defensive impact on one end. On the other, it's the loss of NAW's creative ability and the Josh Hart fast breaks.

I think it’s more the lack of Lonzo, NAW, and Hart spacing the floor. Teams basically said “go ahead and shoot. We’ll just make sure 3-4 guys are glued into Zion at all times.”

I don't know who may have the 3 point break down on Lonzo. My impression since his injury come back is that there is a vast discrepancy between his make percentage on catch and shoot versus other 3 point shots (dribble up fast break and step back/step side). This discrepancy to my eye seems more than it was before the injury and more than the expected or average league difference.

IMO, Lonzo should only take the catch and shoot threes. Otherwise, he needs to dribble drive or pass the ball instead of threes off the dribble. He averages very few free throw attempts per game. It would be nice if he would take it stronger to the hole.

He has hit a few step-backs lately. I notice he struggles in the left corner if he's catching a pass from the top of the arc and has to come across his body to get into his motion. If he catches a dish from the lane in the same spot, he's deadly.

This isn't something that is unique to him. Rhythm is important to all shooters, even the best.
