David Vanterpool as a candidate.

Just bringing different possible candidates up for discussion. He’s a guy we talked about last year when we thought Gentry might get replaced.
As a player he bounced around overseas and played a long time.
Most notably, he played 2 years with Trajan in Moscow and the two know each other well.
He spent a long time on Terry Stotts’s staff in Portland, and was the guy in charge of defense and was highly respected. Also had a very very large role in player development.
Spent the past year on Saunders staff in Minny as the Associate HC and in charge of defense.
Connections. Defensive minded. Player development.

Portland could use him this year by seeing how horrible their defense is right now.

I wanted to bump this one. I think he might be a legit candidate and would love some more discussion.

I think he's exactly the type of guy we need. He had Dame playing "good" D before he left. Brings toughness but also knows how to manage up and down the organization and players love him. Seems like someone with the patience to go grow with the organization.

Never considered Portland to be a defensive team.
Who has developed in Portland? I don't give credit to superstars like Lillard and CJ. They didn't need help to develop.
Meyers Leonard stayed there for a while, and has been decent.
Allen Crabbe seemed to develop well there, and like Leonard was given a bad contract and traded, and has since fallen off a cliff.
Jake Layman seems to have developed somewhat well, and followed him to Minny.
Mo Harkless i guess you could say got better in Portland.
Will Barton was there for 3 years and did nothing, and has been a double digit scorer every year since he was traded from there to Denver.
I guess i can see the player development with those guys.
All in all, i'm not too high on Vanterpool. He's in the discussion with Darvin Ham and Wes Unseld. There are better candidates than them for us.

They were 6th in DRtg 2 years ago (17-18). I never dug into it to figure it out. I always assumed it was a statistical anomaly but they ended the year at 6, so they must have been doing something right.
Top 5 minutes played on that team
Dame/CJ/Evan Turner/Aminu/Nurkic

Yeah and they were 22nd the year before in DRtg, pretty much the same team.

I consider Dame and CJM to be two guys who “get it”. Their endorsement has my attention

I think Houston and Indy may have interviewed him.

I’d vet him and find out as much as I can. He’s going to be a HC soon.
Then you’ve got Zach Collins and j nurkic. They’ve made massive improvements.. I think nurkic is the 2nd best center in league when healthy behind Anthony Davis. Anfernee simmons, Gary Trent All looked good in the bubble and showed progression from 2-3 yrs ago.
Idk If you wanna call it player development, but they definitely have a way of identifying undervalued players that other teams don’t place as much value on. Look where they got Dame, CJ, Zach Collins, Gary Trent, simmons in the draft. In every redraft these guys all get picked earlier. They fleeced Denver for nurkic..
Idk how heavy TS relies on his assistant coach but I’d find out. I don’t think it’s fair to knock him for Portland’s defense b/c they draft all offensive guys. Covering up these deficiencies is a tall task. You guys have nothing but time and assets. He’s a high risk high reward type hire. I think the pelicans should be interviewing more candidates like him. He’s better then all the ex coaches waiting for another chance.
