re: Asik working to adjust to Pelicans

Not positive. But I believe no matter what combination was in, Asik was the only guy not hedging.
Atlanta has pick and pop shooters all over the place so they got some wide open looks out of it. Though they didn't necessarily burn us there. Most of their 3s came with solid ball movement.
There was a time when Davis hedged and his man tried to cut to the basket. Asik made a great rotation, shut the paint down and forced them to kick it back out and start over. Simple play but stuff we haven't seen in a while. Davis and Asik look really good together.
Other notes: Jrue started off slow, but really finished strong, playing aggressive and looking for his shot. Anderson hasn't missed a beat offensively. Jimmer looks good. Withey looks the same, meh.
At one point our defense was struggling, so Monty pulled the Rivers/Jimmer duo and put in Russ Smith, Jrue, and EG together. Smith proceeds to destroy Shelvin Mack, almost forcing a back court and making Mack throw up a wild shot at the end of the shot clock. His defense could get him on the court. With that said, Monty had to chew him out later when he disregarded a play Monty called and tried to drive to the rim instead. Literally in the middle of his drive Monty calls a timeout to chew him out.
We're taking lots of 3s. Especially that second unit.
The SF spot looks like a disaster, without Tyreke. Darius Miller, meh. Babbitt looked ok game 1, couldn't buy a basket game 2. John Salmons doesn't look like an NBA player.

Monty will break him of those kinds of bad habits quickly, especially if he can be a useful defender.

That was definitely one of the things I noticed from the box score. 3 guys got decent runs at SF and all of them failed to produce.
The other thing that stood out was 12 rebounds in 19 minutes for Asik.

Russ Smith really has been disruptive.

Ultra-early "key" stats on NOLA's rookies: Patric Young has 7 offensive rebounds in only 32 minutes; Russ Smith has 4 steals in 24 minutes

Thanks for the report!
Mike Prada had this the other day
Miller or Babbitt aren't any more comforting. I think it won't be much of a problem in the playoffs when teams generally go smaller. But over the season, it could easily bury them. Have to hope that 3 headed monster can do just enough in their ~30MPG

I really want to jump on the Pelicans’ bandwagon, but “John Salmons, Starting Small Forward” is freaking me out.

it's definitely scary, but as long as Reke gets the majority of the minutes, that's all that matters in the long run.

If Evans isn't just at or above 30MPG, we riot.

Agreed. I hope we see AD around 37. He was just shy of 36 last year.

I kind of want Babbitt to win the SF job. None of those 3 are going to give you much defensively. At least with Babbitt you get a guy who will probably hit around 40% from 3.

I hope Tyreke is the winner. It's shades of Beli/Willie/MT5 all over again although a much lower level of talent.

I think they probably will, especially with him coming back from an injury. But my one fear with Salmons has been Monty sticks with the familiar veteran and plays him too much at Tyreke's expense.

His speed and agility are fricking amazing. Now that I've got that off my chest, I do hope he is a good bench scorer. If he can do that, I'm happy.
Reke is the guy. If only he could add two inches in the next couple of weeks. I don't think Salmons will be as horrible as we fear. Darius needs to get his shite together.
I guess that pretty much sums up SF.

Pls monty don't do dis.

quote:I think the combination of Tyreke and Salmons' play will make this an easy decision, if it is one. And judging by Monty's offseason comments, he seems to have turned a corner on Tyreke and the importance of letting him play his game.

Makes sense. Babbitt's shooting helps more with the starters. Evans can still run a bench unit with Jimmer and Ryno spreading the floor.
Very curious to see rotations. Lots of ways to go to make the roster work.
