the jazz were as bush league as bush league gets. The only reason we remember them fondly is they had the best team name in the history of professional sport and the best home whites ever devised...and that couple of years with Pete.
nobody really cared when they left

did any great NBA player get done worse than Pete?
NBA didn't let the Hawks sign Dr. J who would have been amazing paired with Pete.
Spent years on the Jazz poverty franchise.
Goes to Utah and the new coach makes him ride the bench despite being one of the best players in the NBA.

It really isn't talked about enough that we had to delay a nationally televised playoff game because of this.

Delaying the Super Bowl a few years later really overshadows this glorious moment on Nola sports history.

they moved in 1979. I was 14 and a huge fan, but the city forgot about the jazz almost immediately
there was not a more bush league organization in sports before or since. The owner was small potatoes, the GM was a music promoter, they did not have playoff date commitments from their own arena, they made horrible worst-in-history trades (look up Moses Malone and magic Johnson), they ruined the career of an all time great, and they were generally a broke-arse team.
all they had was the name and the colors, like I said which were the best ever

quote:They were very poorly run. The owner's relative lack of funds is the main reason he did not want to change the name when he moved to Utah (as he already had a lot of Jazz materials). The city/state screwed him over though as well with outrageous taxes. The team was fun to follow though with Pistol and Truck Robinson, EC Coleman, Aaron James, Rich Kelley (and Hot Rod Hundley calling the games). I liked with Spencer Haywood joined the team. The Goodrich trade was a debacle (led to Magic and indirectly, Malone). Maybe we associated with different sports fans, because we are the same age and I was devastated when they left as were my friends, many schoolmates and family members.

I had a truck Robinson game worn jersey on my wall LOL. Like I said I was a huge fan, it’s just that you and me and the rest of the fans were a small (very small) minority and the city itself quickly moved on
nothing would make me happier than if they’d have stayed and succeeded

Yep, we split the season series with Boston that year with the home team winning both games.

I was at the MJ game. Hornet mascot would punt the basketball with Hornet colors. It was my night to catch it. Wife set a great screen

here’s a fun fact you probably know but others may not. The jazz owner was a guy named sam battistone and he made his money having founded the sambo’s restaurant chain.
sambo’s was named after a book called “little black sambo” which was about an Indian boy and a tiger. It was battistones only source of income. He got in financial trouble when the business started getting backlash for the racial caricature, made the mascot white and changed the name of the restaurant to sammy’s LOL
Sambos went bankrupt shortly after
