ZZT is redneck rock for the heavy metal market

SD is pleasant mood music - yacht rock w/pretensions

I'm old enough to remember the '70s holdovers who pontificated endlessly about about how SD was much more sophisticated than mere rock & roll (a bad sign) & required true virtuosity to play (another bad sign). People valuing technique over sound. IOTW, people who didn't like acfual rock & roll.

SD intrigues me. They were the pretentious fave in the '70s & '80s, but they've never really expanded their fan base. Compare them to Rush, who are probably more popular now than they were 30 years ago. SD is hardly ever mentioned on this board, while Rush gets mentioned almost every day.

Kind of like comparing filet mignon to beef wellington. Both are good, but completely different dishes.

I will say this much... S.D. recorded much better than ZZ. If you listen to an early S.D. recording and then listen to any ZZ album, its like going from a clean digital recording to AM radio.

Steely Dan (the name of a dildo) is pretentious douche level yacht rock at best whereas ZZ Top is a phenomenal three piece band from Texas.

Both are better than the over played Eagles. Top over Steely, but they are different types of music. Blues and then Jazz.

Can appreciate both as separate things. Fan of blues music in general and appreciate ZZ top through that. But musically, Steely Dan are likely a step above in the music they put out. Seen them both before as I have a lot of opportunity. I've passed on ZZ top, but don't think I've ever passed on seeing Steely Dan.

Opinions differ, but this is the correct answer. As others have said, it's comparing apples to oranges, and the OP may have succeeded in starting a discussion but asking "who's better" is utterly ridiculous.

I've seen both many times, appreciate both for what they do, and still listen to both at home and on the road often. Each excel in their selected craft.

Thanks Top and Dan...
