Why isn’t John Sykes talked about more?

When it comes to people talking about generational talents at guitar? I feel like John Sykes’s work on the Whitesnake album (1987) alone should put him in the discussion.

He’s not just an incredible guitar player, but his vocals are also top notch as well. If you listen to the first album he did with Blue Murder, particularly the track “Valley of the Kings”, this is a great example.

As much as I like David Coverdale, I feel like it was very shitty that he fired John Sykes before the 1987 album was released and had his replacements play in the music videos. I think a lot more people would have known who John Sykes was if this had not happened.

Okay, rant over. How many of you are also fans of John Sykes’s work? Should he be mentioned more on lists of all time great guitarists?

Huge fan. He's sort of an enigma/hermit alot like Jake E Lee these days. John Sykes was and still is a monster guitar player.

Big fan also. Definitely think he’s underrated. He’s one of those cats like John Norum, Adrian Vandenberg, Vivian Campbell, etc who never rose above the band like EVH, Randy Rhoads, Hendrix, Page, and the others considered gods.

I thought the first album was great. I didn't find out 'til sometime later that it was Sykes who was actually responsible for most of the iconic guitar parts on the '87 Whitesnake album. I'd say he qualifies for inclusion on the "underrated guitarist" list.

Adrian Vandenberg, Vivian Campbell

I saw these two together in Whitesnake in 1988 on the Whitesnake tour. Great White opened.

Yes, really solid record! Like it better than anything he did with MoonKings. Just wish he’d reunite with Vandenberg’s original singer, but there’s too much bad blood between them. That Vandenberg debut album, just wow. Some of the best guitar solos put down on record at that time.

I think it’s crazy that Sykes has not put out a studio album since 2000. Why do you guys think he has kinda dropped off the face of the Earth, especially with his music?

In 2013, Sykes revealed he was working on a new solo album.[48] Samples from the record were released in 2014 and Sykes discussed the album in a 2017 interview with Young Guitar Magazine.[49][50] In January 2019, it was announced that Sykes had signed a recording contract with Golden Robot Records with the intent of releasing his long-delayed album that same year. However, in November 2019, Sykes announced that he had ended his partnership with Golden Robot Records.[51] On 1 January 2021, Sykes released "Dawning of a Brand New Day", his first new song in over twenty years.[52] This was followed up by "Out Alive" in July.

Just read his full bio. Looks like he had a lot of misfires trying to start up or reunite with former band members, and some disappointments in record sales of some of his own bands. I had forgotten about Blue Murder, with Tony Franklin and Carmen Appice. I actually have that album (buried somewhere in storage), and remember it being pretty good. Never bought the follow up. Will revisit those records now.

He was supposed to be in the project with Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan, Winery Dogs, but he flaked out and they brought in Richie Kotzen. As much as I dig Sykes, Kotzen is an upgrade across the board.

Saw the Winery Dogs on their first tour in 2014. Excellent band. With Mike back in DT, most of his other bands are now on the back burner. I managed to see Sons of Apollo as well.

I saw Blue Murder open up for Bon Jovi in Monroe, LA at the Civic Center in the summer of 1989. They blew Bon Jovi off the stage. Obviously. Sykes can seriously play & they even played Still of the Night at that show.

Most Les Paul players who patronize my shop say they want their LP to sound like Page, or Gibbons, or Slash.

Nope, sorry, I want mine to sound like John Sykes. Among the GOATs, no question or hesitation.
