yeah and the White Stripes has their song piped in every stadium in the world. Creep was a top 10 hit. They did it with more selection of radio stations and music available. But still not close to charting as high or many as Britney, Gaga, or Perry.

But I'm going to bow out with:

No, you are wrong.

Same with music. Just because someone is able to record an armpit fart to a medium doesn't make them an artist and it sure as hell doesn't mean it's subjectively good.

another dodge of the question. Define quality music instead of using metaphors to explain someone who puts little effort into making music.

Make no mistake, there are still amazing musical artists out there pouring their emotions into their songs but good luck finding them.

Some of you people act like it takes years of research on obscure music blogs on the deep web to find one band you might like. Its really not that hard to step out of the top 40 bubble. Start with a popular blog like Pitchfork or something like that. Read some reviews, maybe look up different critics year end best of lists and check out a few songs on youtube of whoever catches your interest. Keep an eye out on festival lineups. Find one with 3 or 4 bands you like and check out some of the bands you've never heard of. Check out the openers touring with bands you like. Its really that simple. Most people are just too lazy to do anything other than listen to top 40 or classic rock radio in the car on the way to work.

I could not name a single song of theirs, and only know they exist because of Sirius.

Lady Gaga is actually pretty talented.

And while I agree with this, she will be hung with the 'Pop Princess' label for all of musical history.

Some "pop" music stands out - Elvis was essentially a pop musician. So were the Beatles, at times.

Even during the dark days of disco, some acts shone through - but there is so much chaff to sift through on the pop side, that it's hard to not lump it all into the "music as a commodity/formulaic" crap category.

Hell, I like Abba - not all of it, but they were very talented for that time. Madonna's very, very early work (pre-Material Girl) was interesting. But, the pop formula and record company drive for profits makes it all an unpleasant cacophony past a certain point. Hell, they did that with rock and roll in the 1970s with AOR.

My wife listens to the worst music available at all times. When I hear Gaga come on, it is such a relief.

Would you be able to describe why my painting sucks? No, it would be terrible for a myriad of reasons.

If you serve me scalded noodles and watery tomato sauce then I know it sucks. Doesn't mean I dislike Italian food as a whole though. The next person may think it's good, that just means they have poor taste/haven't been exposed to quality Italian food.

Just like there are good and bad movies, there is good and bad music. You can't define what makes it good or bad because each sample is different.

It's easy to say modern music sucks today beacuse nostalgia tends to block the bad crap.

This is also a horrible argument. While I like music from all decades, I tend to prefer music made before I was born, not because of nostalgia, but because it was generally better.

Also, I agree that Gaga is talented and a bright spot on the pop landscape.

I'm reading many of the same complaints I heard when I grew up and we were stuck with WFMF and after BRH went to all jazz

Yeah, I think this goes back to the OP. There was a time when you could hear all kinds of musical genres on pop radio. Didn't necessarily mean it was all good, but at least there was an assortment of things to be exposed to. I'd say this started to go away in the early 2000s.

Now everything on pop radio sounds like it was produced with the same formula, at the same garbage dump.

I try to listen to some of the latest pop music on spotify at times. It is horrible! There is lots of good new music out there. You have to look for it. I keep an eye on rootsmusicreport.com. They have charts of every genre. Also nodepression.com.

You totally missed the point of the post. People who say "music of the 70's is better than today's music because I like Led Zeppelin, The who, and Jethro Tull" forget the 70's also had Debbie Boone, Captain & Tenille, and Alicia Bridges as top 40 hits.

1969 Sugar Sugar by The Archies was no. 1. That annoying song alone should negate any music from 1969 being good with that type argument.

My original post was the guy in the video was comparing Rock music to todays top 40's pop music. Two different genres and audiences.

But 1969 was loaded with groundbreaking, timeless music.

No it doesn't. I know people who have tried a variety of Italian food but still prefer plain stuff. It's what they like. I don't give them shite for it because I'm not so full of myself that's I think they should get something else because my taste buds must just be superior to theirs. Get over yourself and what others think of their watered down noodles. I like my steak rare to medium rare, but that doesn't mean someone else's taste buds are "bad" if he prefers medium well.
