Maybe people have found this obscure treasure trove and just decided it was just ok.

The "treasure troves" are not hard to find. It used to be as easy as just following some of your favorite bands' fan forums that have "other music" boards. Those exists fewer these days because of Facebook. I actually think this board itself is a valuable resource. Just start a thread and ask for suggestions based on your favorite bands. You'll likely get a decent amount of responses. I've learned about several great bands here that I wouldn't have otherwise.

Another avenues are the independent / local radio stations. Listen to KUTX or KLSU. Your bound to find something you like. I discover new bands through them.

Don't waste your time with BigOrange on this subject. He honestly thinks he is the be all and end all when it comes to identifying what good music is (which is whatever his ears like). I've asked him multiple times in threads to give me instructions on how to identify what is objectively "good music" , but he just dodges the question.

No. I mean, you're wrong about everything you have posted in this thread, but this was just the best example.

We have a college station and two independents and they cover the gamut. I also use streaming services. I like to find new stuff but I'm just not finding anything that excites me very much. I find myself going back to 70s, 80s 90s stuff I had overlooked or didn't pay much attention to at the time. Apparently a lot of younger people are more attracted to earlier stuff as well

I'm in my late 20s, pretty much all I listen regularly to is 60s/70s music. pretty much any genre, from Brenda Lee to Rush. I also listen to a good bit of 50s, 80s, 90s stuff. Most of the stuff I listen to from the 2000s is purely nostalgia and I could barely name anyone from this decade besides the stuff that's impossible to not know unless you live under a rock, and some electronic music because I enjoy things like drum-and-bass and dubstep when working out.

eta: I'm sure there are good bands out there somewhere from this decade, but if I gotta dig to find them what difference does it make if I'm digging to find obscure 2010s music or 1960s music.

There is still great music being made today.

But there is very little good pop music being played today. Possibly not any at all.

In the last 20 years the music industry really started to push more towards pretty celebrities and away from talented musicians. They weren't able to make a real dent until grunge died.

Now it's more about having a pretty face or a built-in fan base than being a good musician. They hand pick someone they know they can sell and they push that person onto us through radio and advertising.

On top of the music industry shifting completely away from supporting real musicians, the internet created a way for anyone to distribute music. Everyone is trying to get famous/rich so there's more music being distributed now than ever before.

Make no mistake, there are still amazing musical artists out there pouring their emotions into their songs but good luck finding them.

The profit motive has gone down as well. Streaming has really hurt musicians.

lack of talent ... and technology. people don't have to learn to play instruments or actually sing any more.

He started off by saying how did we get from Bob dylan to Britney, Led Zeppelin to Lady Gaga, Kinks to Katty Perry. Really? Why not compare Lulu(top single of 1967) to Britney? How about Bobby Goldsboro(honey) to Justin beiber?

Compare something a little more relative Like Dylan, Zep, and the Kinks to maybe like Radiohead, Jack White, Wilco, or something similar, like, bands that appeal to white males between the ages of 16-40 at the time of their release.

I'll admit though, I didn't finish the entire video.

Yes really, because those were actually popular and had heavy radio play.

Nope, my Top 40 listening friends would not even know who these are.

Yep, you either know what you like or you don't. If you can't define quality, quit with the euphemisms, because you've lost the argument.

It's easy to say modern music sucks today beacuse nostalgia tends to block the bad crap.

No, popular to white males between the ages of 16-40. They were not top 40 tunes. Maybe if you said The Beatles or Beach Boys but I'd bet you couldn't find a Led Zep, Kinks, bob Dylan song that charted a radio single as high as Britney, Gaga, or Perry.

Better yet, compare Motown, Otis, Aretha to todays R&B/rap. that would be a good comparison.

Yeah, and my mom couldn't name a led Zeppelin or Kinks song to save her life but she will sing Areatha's Respect or Petula Clak's Downtown word for word.

Give me a canvas and a palette, I can try my best, but it ain't gonna be good and it sure as hell ain't gonna be art.

Same with music. Just because someone is able to record an armpit fart to a medium doesn't make them an artist and it sure as hell doesn't mean it's subjectively good.

Sorry to crush your subjective dreams. Take this post subjectively, of course.

That's a taste issue. Kinks had 5 top 10 hits.
Dylan had 4. LZ didn't chart as well, but their stuff is all over the place. I am not a fan yet I know so many of their songs.
