I Picked up my brothers bass one time and gave it a try for about 30 seconds, I handed it back to him and have never touched another one.

Some of my favorite bass licks:

Eddie Breckenridge from Thrice - To What End. Nasty parallel to the guitar with a groovy little solo lick - LINK

Les Claypool of Primus - Southbound Pachyderm. Just filthy. so sick when it drops - LINK

Justin Chancellor of Tool - The Grudge (best tool song ever). omggg - LINK

One of the best bass performances I've ever heard is Jack Bruce's play on Wheels of Fire. He said he tried to make the bass a second lead guitar and on that album, his ambition comes across clearly--and magnificently in my opinion.

I'm not a big Journey fan, but Ross Valery (I think that's his last name) is another great sounding bassist.

The late Lee Dorman from Iron Butterfly also comes to mind, along with Jerry Penrod, the original IB bass player.

Jack Bruce was just so rhythmic and nimble on the instrument and considering he was pulling double duty on lead vocals gave Cream's music the edge that put them over the top. He matches Eric's lead lines note for note a lot.

I thought he was a great vocalist, particularly with Cream. I absolutely agree that his voice, especially on the hard, driving Cream songs, gave the music an edge, the muscular type of vocals the songs demanded. Greatly missed, he is!

I'm in a band with two guitarists and a drummer, no bass player (we're looking though). When we play somewhere I hear the absence of that bottom end sound and it just ain't right, it's like sailing a ship without an anchor or ballast.

No looking down on bassists from this corner.

Did we forget Jack Casady? He was one of the godfathers of bass guitar.

Back when I was in a band, we gave bass duties to the least coordinated and musically talented individual. Great guy, one of my best friends, but damn that guy has no rhythm. It turned out all right.

The hierarchy (as far as respect from groupies) is generally:
Lead singer
Drummer
Lead guitar
rhythm guitar
Bassist
DJ
keyboard

As a (now) drummer and (former) guitar player....this is pretty bad.

Drummer pulls the crazies. Guitar pulls the steady stream of tail.

Still say John Deacon (Queen) is criminally underrated.

Crazies are great in bed though. Drummer's and lead guitarists are about equal, though. It's a big dropoff after that.

I would take a great rhythm section and a mediocre guitarist any day over a band with great guitarist and shitty rhythm section.
