I saw them play at the Stone in San Francisco in 1983. Dave Mustaine was drunker than the people in the audience, but you could tell they were going to be huge.
Seriously, Metallica made their reputation by being road warriors. They take great rpide in their live performances. They honed their act in front of live audiences, and that is a skill they haven't lost. The vocals are not what they once were, but the instrumental work is always first rate.

Rev Horton Heat blew them off the stage when they opened for them at Lakefront Arena years ago.

Rage cant touch Metallica.....now or then.
Not even close. Rage couldnt even touch them as a opening band.
But anyway.......saw Metallica about 2 years ago in Dallas and they still kick some serious arse.
And they have a pretty massive mosh pit....so get ready for a body to fly over your heard if you are in there!

Saw them on this tour, as well. In Biloxi. Show kicked arse.
Saw them later at Lollapalooza. Not the same but still a great show.

As far as concerts go, this one will probably never be duplicated in my book. That summer was the absolute peak of Metallica, and they were just on fire that night. Unforgettable.

Actually, I saw that Lollapalooza '96 bill, and for me, that was the only time Metallica were clearly surpassed by another act. RATM was pretty much the best live act out there in '96, and Metallica were touring behind Load. So when you think about it like that...

I agree, and I wasn't even a part of the amazing doob-fest going on around me.
