Huh?

I'll give them their due, for sure. But that's a stretch.

My sentiments exactly. I can appreciate what they mean to a lot of people but do not care for them except whatever is on "Skeletons in the Closet" album.

Who else gathered the fanatic following that the dead did?

They are the measuring stick for every single Jam Band that has came along since.

Um, no its not. Between their influence in the sf hippie lsd scene and then what is now the jamband scene, the dead have left their footprint everywhere in society.

Springsteen has a fanatic following...

I'll give The Dead their due, but a lot of that following has a lot to do with stuff other than music... it's a drug culture...

A following full of people who have been to hundreds upon hundreds of his shows? People who virtually lived on the road, who made their money on the road with him?

You can find drugs anywhere there was only one place every night that the dead were playing.

Most people have jobs and don't want to make a living selling drugs, trinkets or other crafts on the road ...or panhandling. I don't think someone's fans have to follow them around the country to prove anything, there is a law of diminishing returns

Whatever you say, but I know many that followed the dead and it was more so for the whole experience than the music in and of itself, to say otherwise is disingenuous or naive...

They are one of the few that have that kind of "following" and the other bands have something very similar in common

Springsteen has no where near the following the dead had.

I'm not saying it is a noble pursuit I'm just stating the facts.

Sure it was the whole experience the brotherhood and camraderie was a big part of Dead shows.. However I will admit that I can't speak too much on the subject as I was too young when Jerry died to ever have the privelege to see them.

What is your knock on the drugs that everyone of your favorite artists use and/or used as well?

so, the same people following the dead around constitute some huge fan base?

I think you underestimate Springsteens fan base... and I wasnt even suggesting its the biggest, but as fanatic...

I know he has sold around 160 million records world wide, I'd be curious to know what the Dead sold (maybe more?)

Probably not seeing as how their culture revolves around the taping and trading of shows.

I actually let and let live... Ive done my share in the day... but It was never part of any musical movement I followed... I was just pointing out how it has a lot to do with their following, or maybe it was just all the fans ive ever met...

I dont argue that they are a phenomenon of sorts and I respect their longevity and dedication to the music...

Thats what I would think, but its another barometer to judge world wide following... i think the gap is a lot smaller, in either way, than ru suggests...

Of course the drugs followed them they originated from Haight-Ashbury. They were smack arse in the middle of the LSD hippie scene.

But as I said before the drugs could be found anywhere at anytime but the Dead were only one place any given night.

All I've got to say on that subject is that Bruce Springsteen wasn't the face of an entire counter culture, not to mention THE most important counter culture in the history of this country.

Perhaps, I focused too much on the drugs in my rambling... Id say the "event" as a whole... I fail to believe its all about the music...

Anyway, too bad you never got a chance to see them... out of curiosity, how old are you?

and I would agree

However it is the music who brought all these people together that created that wonderful circus they called a Dead show.

I like American Beauty/Working Man's Dead era... other than that and the odd song here and there, never really cared for them.

I find them pretty meh....Never got into them. I think their fans overrate em, their haters underestimate them. Their fans will rate them extremely high though

Like some of their stuff, just not my type of music. Gotta give them high marks for their fanatical base though.
