Shania gets my vote too as the main culprit.
When singers were being praised for "crossing over," I knew the nail was being driven in. In the 90s they were crossing over pop. Now it's rap/hip-hop.

That was the moment that everyone knew the end was near the true turning point was the moment that the first man realized that country music could be successfully marketed towards preteens, suburban soccer moms and rednecks at the same time.

I think lots of people have been talking about 'pretty boy shite' in country music for years. At the least in the 70s and 80s but probably before that as well, there has always been more pop-oriented stuff within country music. Although a lot of it has not stood the test of time, it was popular back in its own time.

All specific artists aside this is purely driven by the radio stations and record companies.
I'm convinced that there are some high up decision makers that have a running joke on the silliest shite they can put out to weak minded and ignorant folks and then make a profit. That's the only explanation for radio stations agreeing the go along with these jokers like shelton Aldean and Gilbert.

Achy Breaky Heart becoming a hit might have signaled the decline, but even then there was good mainstream country music into the late 90's and 2000's. Country radio has really turned to shite in the last 5 or so years.
As far as Garth Brooks goes, I can understand why some associate him with the downturn of mainstream country, he was the first country superstar, his concerts had an arena rock feel, and the entire Chris Gaines debacle, but lost in that is the fact that Garth Brooks was/is a great country musician. He's closer to Hank Williams than he is to any of the new "country" stars. His name definitely doesn't deserve to be associated with the likes of Jason Aldean or Luke Bryan.

The only thing wrong with Garth is that he paved the road for today's trash. I enjoy his music for the most part but at the end of the day he stole the soul from the genre
That's always been in the back of my mind, just didn't wanna come to grips with it.
But even then, the guy is a fantastic country singer, MUCH more country than those guys on the air now.

Mainstream Country is no longer the white man blues.
I don't see it that way. Plenty of the old great songs weren't about sadness.

My all time favorite in country is Garth brooks. Do I lose points to the country purists?
Yes, yes you do. But in addition to losing points from them you also lose points from recreational country enthusiasts, occasional country listeners, country fried steak, anyone who enjoys original music and I think I hear some dubstep kids in the corner making fun of you too.

When did Country Music Lose its Feel?
Started in the 90s, and now that Reality TV has made being "country" the cool thing its opened up a whole new can of worms. Now anything and anyone is considered country as long as they make damn sure to talk about backroads, beer drinking, farming, and/or jamming out to :Insert any outlaw country legend here: in their "music"

From one of my favorite websites:
7 Men Who Could Immediately Make Country Music Better
All is not lost. There is still some really good country out there if you look in the right places.

Somewhat similar to what isbell says..
There are steaks out there, surrounded by a whole lot of McDonald's.
Just have to find them.
