Somewhat related, while I did not loathe them, I did not get either Steely Dan or Todd Rundgren whe they were current. Now? I listen every chance i get.

Definitely came around on Steely Dan. No way would I tell my punk or metal friends I wanted to listen to an easy listening band. My mistake. Great band. Same with Johnny Cash, as I was resolutely anti-country, much to my chagrin. Missed out on some great stuff.
Bands I liked that now I hate? Even bands that fell out of favor with me, I still like for nostalgia. Reminds me of a different time. I liked Anthrax a lot more as a kid than I do now, I guess. Same with Suicidal Tendencies.

If you want to know where most of the late 70's/early 80's acts from the UK got their influence. Listen to Roxy Music's first 5 albums.
It's the blue print for half the shite you know.
And they're way way better.

When I was little (8-10 years old) I hated the Stones. Mick's voice sounded stupid, and I couldn't figure out what the hell they were singing about.
A few years later, I hit puberty, realized they were basically making ear secks with every woman in the crowd, and then making actual secks with them after the show. I understood what rock and roll was all about, and I started playing guitar.

I grew up to actually enjoy Meatloaf. The "rock opera" that is Bat out of Hell... is a fun album.

Couldn't stand disco when I was a teenager, but get nostalgic when I hear it now. Still don't like it, but don't hate it like I did as a kid.

As for Roxy, I hated More Than This when it was on MTv all the time. Love it now. Love Avalon. Hate every other song of theirs and all of the guy's solo stuff.

This is terrible advice.
Just because a band was heavily influenced by a band before them, doesn't mean you should only listen to the predecessor.
The Cure are/were a fantastic and original band.
To insinuate that they just completely ripped off Roxy Music is ridiculous.
