Certainly country music royalty based on album sales alone. Didn’t write any of the early hits and didn’t play on the early records.
Mediocre musicians, decent 3 part harmony.
Great success story though and I always enjoyed their music.

Granted they didn't write many of the early hits, but they wrote about a quarter of them. Of the first 20 #1s, Randy Owen wrote 4 (Tennessee River, Feels So Right, Mountain Music, and Lady Down on Love) and Teddy Gentry co-wrote the other (Why Lady Why). Owen & Gentry also co-wrote My Home's in Alabama, which was a top 20 song.
Also, I can't say for sure, but all members of the band were credited as playing on the early records. Mark Herndon was only credited on 1 track of the debut album My Home's in Alabama, but other than that I have never seen it said that they didn't contribute at least some instrumentally.

How were they a "supergroup?"

Well they’re awesome and should be a supergroup, I just remembered when I would say all their albums on TV they were always referred to as country music supergroup Alabama.

They are playing in Bossier City July 11.

They put out 3 albums before their 1980 breakout. Those are the recordings and tracks I was referencing.

CCR, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Alabama are my favorite bands. Alabam is probably tops for me just because I more into country than rock.
