Let's say I wanted to get a guitar for cheap in order to customize it (new pick-ups, new ardware, ect.) and create a truly beautifully sounding instrument. What kind of guitar would be a great cheap foundation that has the potential to sound amazing with a little bit of work?

Fender Squire strat.

Ditch the factory pups and drop in some custom shop fat 50s ($150 or so upgrade).

also, for an epiphone and for a strat, what are some great pickups? I'd like to have one great one for playing clean with a smooth melodic tone and one that sounds bad arse with classic rock-style overdrive.

Theres a lot more to upgrade than just the pickups. Pots, Caps, Jacks, Switches all make a difference. Replacing the nut can help depending on your preferences, also replacing the bridge can make a huge difference tonally.

If you're going to go this route, I'd get a cheap used telecaster (USA or a cool Mexican) and do the upgrades to that. There's tons of info on the interweb regarding tele upgrades.

IMO if you want a real lester, just save up for the Gibson, there's still plenty to upgrade there.

Mexi fenders to me are better than squires because it gives you a muchbetter base to work off of

Mexi strat- Texas specials pickups, 62 bridge, locking tuners, bridge pup wiring tone knob mod, pearl pickguard

Mexi tele- lindy fralin stock pickups, bridge with compensated brass saddles, locking tuners, 4 way switch mod
