Often seen as the face of Duran Duran, an act that had hits spanning decades, and in the 80s certainly one of THE “it” bands. I watched an 80s live performance on YouTube and noted Simon’s talent and energy throughout. He was basically the main presence and held it down, solely, with no hesitation or problem. IMO a huge and massively underrated talent.

Agree or disagree or...?

Love their music but he has a very flat singing voice.

Underrated? He's okay but I don't agree here, although I do like him. DD was certainly a massive juggernaut in their day, and he held his own, but not a hugely talented singer. Can't comment on his stage presence as that makes a big statement even with those without huge singing talent (see Springsteen or Bono, for example) as opposed to really talented singers/frontmen like Plant or Mercury.

An interesting comparison to other singers of the day is found in the "Do They Know It's Christmas" song back in the 80's. He holds up okay but the more talented singers really shine compared to the others. Actually I don't think Band Aid had the absolute best singers. "We Are The World" probably had more talent. I still like listening to these songs just to hear the different voices.

So much of their music is garbage, but there are real gems throughout. The vast majority of it was horribly dated two years after release. As the poster above noted, he does tend to sing flat. However, he overcomes that with great emotion. Ordinary World is one of my favorite vocals for that reason. He was a very solid 80s frontman and in his favor he did it without the hallmark of the era- the screechy high notes.

Lot emotion in that song. The same emotion wasn't in the follow up single of Come Undone but there is a snarl in Too Much Information (the song mentions MTV, BBC, and ABC in regard to their career and then being dropped essentially "destroyed by BBC; I'd hate to bite the hand that feeds with so much information")

Charismatic guy and great singer.......he probably should have been bigger after DD. Leverage that band as a springboard into a great solo career the way Rod Stewart or George Michael did. Not sure why he wasn't bigger.

Big early Duran fan. Simon LeBon has always been a bit of an enigma for me. He does have a commanding presence on stage but can be a bit awkward on stage also. Some of his lyrics are brilliant and others are just gibberish.

"Shake up the picture the lizard mixture
With your dance on the eventide"
- New Moon On Monday

A solid singing voice that really hasn't lost much over time. Overall, he is slightly underrated.

Not a fan of his singing, he tends to run flat about 50% of the time. It's almost like a "style" for him now that he's been doing it so long. And BTW, have always like Duran Duran.

Forgettable band from the haircut/linen suit/skinny tie era. Up there with Dexy's midnite runners, The Fixx and Cajagoogoo.

I don't think he's underrated. I think he is what he is. Some hit with me and others not.

The Chauffeur has always been mesmerizing to me. But also a perfect song of how being out of tune seems to work for Simon.

Rio is about the only album I can really listen to. It has the vibe of a Michael Mann movie soundtrack.

I always got a huge kick out the lyrics on the Rio album. It's like madlibs done by a Downs kid. I used to date a hardcore Durannie and she would get so pissed at me for making fun of it. I was like "There's no way that means anything at all. Not even symbolically." I still dug the hell out of the music though.
