Type O Negative

Saw them in 1998 in Shreveport and they were beyond magnificent. A truly original band that draws inspiration from the likes of Black Sabbath, Bauhaus, and the Cocteau Twins.
When I first heard their songs, I thought they were silly and sounded like Taco's "Puttin' on the Ritz" or some kind of Halloween specialty. Then, I bought Bloody Kisses and saw and heard a whole new side to them. October Rust sounded so damn good that I had to get their old stuff -- which disappointingly sounded like Black Flag meets GBH meets Taco. BUT, their final releases were very cool...their live concert I am attaching showcases them at the end before Peter Steele died. Steele was such an interesting figure -- a Playgirl model and at 6'7"1/2, he was just a menacing-looking figure, but he was a great and humble interview. October Rust captured their sound, but really sort of softened it...in a good way. Yeah, lots of kids dressed in black and who hated their parents listened to them, but so did frat boys and middle-aged fathers. It was just unique like that.
In April, Peter will be gone 8 years. The band called it quits...unlike many who continue on with 2-4 singers, the other 3 bandmates could not go on.
I get it...it's weird and "GOTH" (not really), but hearing them live and listening to their last 4 albums as of late...they were so damn good. Nothing sounded like them. NO way they will ever even be a thought for the R&R HOF. And they shouldn't be. BUT...some recognition needs to be given. Crunchy guitar chords with vampirish lyrics mixed with "funeralesque" keyboards...it just sounded great. It sounded like a beautiful tragedy.
Enjoy these, if you are a fan or are curious:

I saw them twice. First time was at Click's. It was alright. Second time was opening for Hatebreed in New Orleans. They played one song, a 45 minute version of Kill All the White People. Peter said something about everyone here to mosh to Hatebreed can frick off. I much prefer them on record to live. Favorite albums are October Rust and World Coming Down.

I had them at Triple A back in the day. Gravity kills opened for them.

I only really got into them right before Steele died. Crushed that I never got to see them live.
All their albums are awesome except the very first one.

'98 was Malibu Alley...an outdoor venue. They had some awesome shows from 94 to 99, as did Dom's Warehouse.

I saw them in 2000 at HOB in NOLA with Coal Chamber opening. I was about 10ft from Steele. I remember a girl standing next to us told us she was going to pass out so they could bring her to Peter Steele and he would touch her and she would wake up. I told her not to do that, it was wasting the ticket.
He comes on stage and sure enough like clock work, she passes out. The bouncers come and get her and take her out of the club. She didnt even get to hear a song.
They put on a great show. At the end he grabbed the strings on his bass and ripped them off.
