Adam Jones is criminally underrated. Some of his best work is in Fear Inoculum imo. He really shines in 7empest.

I had never heard of this. Based on the art and the sound - this is now just transparently supposed to be psychedelic music?

Not quite sure how to answer this. The general answer is it isn’t “supposed” to be anything. Most of their song lyrics are very much up to personal interpretation. Some tell a more specific story like Wings1/2. Some are very much psychedelic like Rosetta Stoned based on a story from a bad trip.
The art in recent albums is from Alex Gray and certainly tends to lean towards psychedelic.

I’d say Fear Innoculum is different. More themes of maturing into adulthood. Not trying to be flip with the answer. Theres much depth to their catalog and they’re purposefully obtuse. It has given their music longevity

It's not the lyrics I'm reacting to - it's the overall vibe/sound.

Judith and Wings for Marie are both about Maynard’s mother. From what I’ve read, 10,000 days was the length of time between her stroke and passing.

Jimmy on Aenima as well. It’s assumed to be about her aneurysm.

Horizons by Puscifer as well. It’s about scattering her ashes on his vineyard. Lots of mom songs and they cover the gambit of emotions

Wings is about being at her mother's deathbed.

There’s definitely a psychedelic quality to their sound. It’s a hard sound to categorize.

I suppose that is why they are considered "progressive".
