TP was one of the greatest song writers in history and I'll put he and the Heartbreakers on a very short list of who should be considered the greatest American rock band.

Absolutely agree. Soundtrack of my life is all Tom Petty.

Me too. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are an iconic group from the classic age of rock music.

This is true. However I was taken aback to learn that one of TP's most iconic songs, "Free Fallin'", was mostly written by ELO's Jeff Lynne.

Southern version of Bruce Springsteen minus the pretentiousness and self absorption. Some of his best songs never really made it to radio. Listen to Down South, Walls,
Southern Accents and Alright for Now. Great, great songs.

Greatest American songwriter ever.
I’m partial to John Fogerty. But I do like Petty

Stevie Nicks wanted to be a Heartbreaker, FFS, and she is responsible for squillions of record sales of that era.
Jimmy Iovine set her up for success by using Tom Petty to record ‘stop dragging my heart around’ as a duet for her. It was supposed to be a Tom Petty single but that pussy drove him to weasel his way into getting her on that record. I kind of got the felling TP was a little chafed at Jimmy because I don’t think he told TP they were banging at the time. But it’s a classic great song.

If we are going to not celebrate musicians who had dependancies and were rebels, we are all going to be bored as hell

Yea, I'm not sure the ever actually made a bad album.
