CheeseburgerEddie The Official Jam Band Tier Thread - Adjusted for .0 and Nostalgia Acts so zeppelin was a jam band, at least they had some jamband songs? - if extended improv is definition of jam

Extened improv doesnt make a jamband to me. Miles davis isnt a jamband. BUT a band that caters to a particular audience, jams and makes you wanna shake your arse is most certainly a jamband, like lettuce and kdtu.

I thought the same thing. Lettuce definitely jams.

Jazz is the original jam band. But you really need a guitar and bass guitar to be considered a jam band in the sense of what this thread discusses

I agree that the term is a loose one, and those bands definitely fall into the jazz/funk mold, but they can be jambands as well imo. Like you said, this is an arbitrary science.

They regularly come on JamOn like every other band on this list, so they qualify in my mind. They were pretty good when I saw them about a month ago.

By this measure, Portugal. The Man is a jam band. Along with tons and tons of other bands that I would never consider a jam band.

Outlier

90% of what they play would fit this list.

Lets here your definition of a jamband since mine is

My definition involves guitar and improvisational-based jamming. In the mold of Grateful Dead/ABB/Phish/WSPsux. It's a very loose term, kind of along the lines of "I know it when I see (hear) it".

Awesome concrete answer.

So, lettuce (eric krasno) and kdtu (brian jordan) both have good improv guitarists that jam. So why arent they jambands again? They fit your definition

Who said the answer has to be concrete? Again, the definition is completely arbitrary. As in, it's hard to really define and everyone's definition will be different.

Their music isn't based on guitar. Yes, they have a guitar, but guitar doesn't drive their tunes and aren't the focal point of it for the most part.

Jambands can only be guitar driven?

Les claypools flying frog brigade is clearly a bass driven jamband.

yeah, lettuce and kung fu both do that

just because there's a saxaphone or brass instrument doesn't discount it as a jam band

That's the way I typically define a jam band, yes. IDGAF if you think it's stupid.

I think we're done here.
