It's pretty an all but this song is about the post civil war trials of southerners and it needs some serious soul to pull it off something ZBB and Joan lacked. You can't get much more soulful than Levon belting out this classic.

It´s not a lament, in spite of utilizing the same lyrics, it seems to be a sort of celebration, does it not?
Nothing to do with the real one.
I´m a bit ashamed to admit it, but I did like Joan Baéz. I do agree however, it´s not one of her better efforts.

Never got into her politics, I don´t think she was very bright. I think she was a bit of a child prodigy and misguided, and manipulated. I simply liked her voice and pickin´.

Oh I can't blame you there. Hell Eddie vedder is a massive douche but I still love PJ. Actually most great musicians are misguided douches
