A Life of Possibilities - Holy shite this was bad. Like bad enough that I didn't get bored, I was eagerly awaiting how much worse it might get.

Ellen and Ben - Ok this wasn't that bad, it wasn't good, but not like the first one. It's like a slightly humorous emo song set to purposefully discordant music

Gyroscope - I was working by the time this one came on, so it wasn't bad enough to catch my attention, but I didn't like it, either.

Admittedly, I'm a simple man. I like smart/different music, but if the music is purposefully not-melodic, no amount of intelligence in songwriting will save it for me.

I disagree with pretty much all of that, but music is subjective and as much as I love them, I can see the DPlan not being someones cup of tea.

I'm just waiting for someone to come in this thread and talk about how the Dismemberment Plan sucks.

For sure

My issue with most of the music beloved on here that I "don't get" is that it's just generally unpleasant for me to listen to. It's almost like the goal is to make music that isn't radio friendly, lacks melodic qualities and won't ever be called "catchy."

If it's disjointed, inconsistent, discordant, weird for the sake of being weird, etc. - I just don't like it. And I think that's a fairly objective take, but I'm interested in how you'd think about stuff like that. Do you listen to those Dismemberment Plan songs and go "man, this sounds great" and it gets stuck in your head all day? Or do you listen to it and go "this is different, it's not like most stuff I hear, it's unique, I like it"?

I'm not attempting to be critical, my point is that it's hard to tell whether people like different things in music, or if they hear things entirely differently, if that makes sense.

I'll answer from my POV, though I realize the question wasn't directed at me..

That is usually my barometer, though not always (sometimes it may be the beat)... I also like noise.. distorted guitar.. and a melody that isn't always immediate...

This is the song that is on repeat in my mind this morning.. Superchunk - Swallow That

Here's another one... my co-worker thinks this is just an unlistenable racket..

All I hear is the gorgeous melody...

Oblivians - Bad Man

I do find them catchy and their songs have gotten stuck in my head many of times. I'm not a musician, nor an amazing writer, so it's usually hard for me to explain why I like certain music, but I just remember listening to the DPlan for the first time and being blown away. Although you can hear their influences in them, they still sounded totally unique to me. Just a perfect oddball pop sound. Plus their drummer is totally badass.

But I can see someone finding them off-putting. They have weird time signatures. They can be abrasive. The singers voice isn't what you would describe as classically great.

I will concede that I regret making this thread. Too much bourbon that night. I realize that some people my like this kind of music, But when I was watching their performance on ACL I just couldn't fathom who.

One of my favorite bands of about the past decade or so. They are incredible to my ears. I can see others not digging it though.

I kind of hate that this is the thread where we discuss the new album, but Day I Die is excellent. Probably my favorite of all the singles for this album. Bryan Devendorf is such a greater drummer.

All four of the songs that have been released so far are great, imo.
