I like Jesus and Mary Chain, but it's obvious why they never really became big. They did a lot of "noise" music with screeching background sounds and other bits of randomness.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club became popular because they took the more easily digestible elements of JMC and cut out the randomness.

I need to listen to more JMC.I'm pretty much limited to Head On and Sometimes Always - both of which are amazing songs and still get played often on my ipod.
I loved putting Head On on party tapes when I was in school. It was one of those songs that helped me identify the cool chicks.
