The Edge - Joshua Tree Thread Spinoff

Is The Edge really a great guitar player? He definitely created a unique signature sound with the Joshua Tree and later however I've never really seen him shred an impressive solo. He seems to be really about the sound and not the skill. Maybe he was held back to not upstage Bono but you'd think there'd be some live stuff on youtube where he really shines.

No I wouldn't say he was a great player. As you said, he has carved out his sound that fits his ability and the rest of the band. So you can certainly appreciate him on that level but I wouldn't put him in a class with Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, etc.

I think he definitely created a unique style and accompaniment for his band, which is definitely something that has distinguished his work and the U2 sound from just about everyone else.
In such a relatively formulaic genre (not a knock at all) as late 20th century rock/pop, that's quite an accomplishment.
The Edge will never get style points like a Van Halen or a Slash from that era. But I think the uniqueness, whether you dig it or not, stands out.

He is a good player, but for me he uses way to many effect pedals

Exactly.
Check out "It Might Get Loud", sort of a documentary film with the Edge, Jimmy Page, and Jack White. Excellent.

Yes it is. I really didn't know much about him until I saw that. Highly recommend it.

In my opinion, carving out a niche is the only thing that matters. Who cares if he can shred? So yes, great.

I think he's a phenomenal guitar player. Very atmospheric. He's not a shredder with flashy solos or a riff machine like Keith Richards or Angus Young. It's more about what fits in with the song.
