The concept of "ramblers" or "rolling stones" in early rock music

I can think of dozens of songs that refer to rambling, ramblers, rambling man/men, etc.
Also the concept of the "rolling stone" is well documented in music, from the band "The Rolling Stones" the music magazine Rolling Stone to multiple lyrics and song titles using the phrase.
Both terms refer to a person that is free to roam about, that has no ties to bind him down. A man who answers to no one and who makes his own way in the world.
It's a lyric and phrase you don't hear about much any more.

It's time I was on my way.

Started with Muddy Waters in music, from the old saying "a rolling stone gathers no moss".
Should clarify, the term "rolling stone" specifically.
The rambler, drifter concept is as old as music.

Because "rambler" and "rolling stone" sound a lot more fun and sexy than "drifter", "hobo", "vagrant", "bum", etc., which are far more accurate.

I thought he died after smoking his last cigarette

'Cause you're a rambler and a gambler
And a sweet-taIking-ladies man
And you love your lovin'
But not like you love your freedom"
Joni Mitchell
Yeah, I identified with that for a while. Glad I got over it.

Lord, I was born a ramblin' man
Tryin' to make a livin' and doin' the best I can
And when it's time for leavin'
I hope you'll understand
That I was born a ramblin' man

Papa was a rolling stone
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died, all he left us was alone
Papa was a rolling stone (my son, yeah)
quote:
Oh well I'm the type of guy who will never settle down
Where pretty girls are well, you know that I'm around
I kiss 'em and I love 'em 'cause to me they're all the same
I hug 'em and I squeeze 'em they don't even know my name
They call me the wanderer, yeah the wanderer
I roam around around around

Drifters were seen as outsiders - outsiders are invariably romanticised
Leading to:
In America the road/highway symbolizes not displacement but freedom.

One of my dad’s favorite songs was an Italian one by Nicola Di Bari called Vagobondo
Very catchy

I can imagine the video.. a couple of guys on custom Vespa scooters with Italian flags painted on them
Really, that sounded pretty cool though.

Sometimes I feel like Jesse James,
Still trying to make a name.
Knowing nothings gonna change what I am.
I was a young troubadour,
When I rode in on a song.
And I'll be an old troubadour,
When I'm gone.

Back in the day, it seemed like every other Cajun band was named either Ramblers or Playboys, plus the city or town they were from, i.e. Hackberry Ramblers
