Next week I turn 50 and Im giving myself a new acoustic guitar. Ive narrowed it down to these 2 and would like any opinions about these. What say you?

You can't really go wrong with either one.
The taylor has a skinnier neck? That would push me to the Martin, but you aren't me
Which one just feels better to you?

But since Fret Shack dude doesn't seem to be here to give me shite.. I feel it is my job to persuade you to buy a guitar with solid back and sides.

Both are great. It's just personal preference. I prefer the darker, warmer sound of a Martin.

Martins are better guitars. But for the true sound you have to drop 2k+

Out of these two the Taylor is the better guitar IMO, and better bang for you buck

Both solid guitars, but the Taylor has better action. It is a brighter sound as well. If you're looking for that warmer tone, then go with the Martin.

I use the 210 and I love it.

Kind of like asking if you should buy a Porsche or Ferrari. Play them both and whichever one feels better is the one I would choose.

I've never played a Martin but I just bought my first Taylor and that damn thing is smooth. I almost feel like a professional when I play it. But, as others have said, it's what feels best for you.

in that price range, I think I agree with folks here. The Taylor is the better guitar.

I like Martin better when you get to Cadillac level models. 15, 18, 28, 35, and of course 45.

But this is really a BMW vs. Mercedes argument. Which one tickles your pickle? Thats the one.

I'll echoplex what's been said. Both sound and play nice, get the one which you enjoy under your hands and in your ears more.

If I had to pick between the two, I'd go with the Taylor. I prefer the sound of the Martin DX, but I have had several Martin DXs on my bench with backs separating from the sides. It's due to a synthetic, non-porous back material and the adhesive the factory uses not being strong enough for the task to which its charged.

The DX back separations in every case, however ... dropped while inside the case, fell off stand, tipped over while leaning on couch, etc. Any cracks were at the point of impact on the flat of the material, not the joint itself - separations have been unsplintered, uncracked and simple glue joint failures. And they were easy and cheap fixes on the bench ... I simply re-glued using clamps specifically for the task and a MUCH better glue for the job.

So your takeaway ... if you plan to travel and/or bang around the guitar, if you leave guitars on stands with kids or grandkids running around, or you yourself are kinda clumsy, definitely get the Taylor :)

My experience (YMMV) having owned both a Martin (DC16R-GTE) and a couple of Taylors (210 and GS Mini mahogany)...
The Martin had to be played kind of hard to open up the sound, played a little stiffer and if you left it in the case too long, it let you know you had ignored it when you picked it back up. You have to play it pretty regularly to keep your chops up.
The Taylors are brighter and can be played with a lighter touch, in fact they don't seem to like the heavy hand a Martin does. Easier to put down for a few days and pick right back up again. More comfortable at first touch.
So, if you don't mind working a little harder, the Martin will reward you with more volume and a better sound (in my opinion.) This is just based on my own experience with the models listed, I don't know much about the DX.

I play a 110ce and I love it...had a sound guy tell me once that it wass the first acoustic he has ever seen that he didn't have to do much tweaking with at the board to get it sounding good going straight into the system...it holds tune for like weeks at a time...I know this cause I rarely get to play nowadays... and when I pick it up...its still pretty much in tune....very solid guitar for the $

I told you guys I was bookmarking this thread,so I can post a song that I wrote, somehow inspired by this thread.

Hard to believe it has taken this long to get down and do that demo, but that's what I did today.
Friend of mine is editing/fixing some stuff on it.

Looking forward to posting it here for y'all's listening torture tonight,if I can figure out how.

It's turned out to be a damn decent song.

The closer they are in price, the more I lean Martin from the "investment" standpoint. Having said that, I prefer Taylor to Martin - generally - although there are some models that flip this.

Have you considered vintage at your budget? I find that vintage guitars have a sound that just can't be replicated by a new guitar, no matter how good. I have a half dead, almost 40 year old Guild D-35 that just resonates like a grand old piano from back in the day.

Simply can't get that in a new guitar, no matter how much you spend.

That's mean.

Get a Blueridge BR-160. It's chinese but sounds enough like a D-28 to justify with the money you saved.

Wasn't about being mean. One is Formica, I've got one (a 12 string) and it's pretty good. And the Taylor what can I say, you either luv'em or not, I'm just not really a walnut fan.

Was just curious what he pulled the trigger on?
