Mogwai isn't a jam band. They are post rock.
Man you're stubborn. Admit defeat and move on. They are both.
quote:

Jam bands seem to be more about getting loose and noodling around, whereas post-rock, even at its most chaotic and disorderly, still feels very structured. (Which I think is ultimately why I prefer it.)
While much of their music is structured, they still improvise live. A jam band like the Disco Biscuits spends most of their time noodling and yet still plays electronic music; they cross genres, blend genres, and improvise live. A jam band like Umphrey's Mcgee has extremely technical, structured songs with much less noodling and exhibits progressive rock, funk, jazz, blues, metal, electronic, bluegrass, and everything in between; they cross genres, blend genres, and improvise live. A jam band like Mogwai has even less noodling and is mostly post-rock, shoegazing, math rock, art rock and occasionally instrumental metal; they cross genres, blend genres, and improvise live. While some bands are far more structured and clean (less noodly), they still jam and improvise live over various chord patterns and long sets of music that cross genre boundaries.
quote:

Post rocks roots are in punk rock and ultimately indie rock.
Yes. And?
quote:

Sonic youth inspired a shite ton of bands with their music.
Yes. And?
quote:

Ambient noise experimental bands are not "jam bands".
If they don't "improvise live over various chord patterns and long sets of music that cross genre boundaries", then they are not. Correct. Experimental band =/= jam band. However, an experimental band can be a jam band.
quote:

one of my favorite things about post-rock bands is their attention to tone and sound, which I don't think you would find in a lot of jam bands
Precisely my point. You are still only attaching the term "jam band" to bands that you consider "hippie" or "Dead-ish". You're behind in the times. Try to keep up.

(in fact I kind of associate them with horrible guitar tones)
Why do you hate American rock-n-roll?

You're not going to get him to admit that he is wrong, it would make him a hypocrite.

Its funny, you and 2 other people that are phish fans are the only people I've ever heard call mogwai, a post rock, experimental band, a "jam band".

Quite frankly, it's extremely ignorant and borderline insulting.

Tell ya what, when I get off work, i will youtube this mogwi band and make an executive decision on whether they are a jam band or not. Whatever I decide will be the final ruling. Fair and balanced judging of music...

You're the only person I've ever met that doesn't think they are a jam band. I don't know why you are so against the term. Does it change the music for you, or is it some pre-conceived notion of who jam bands fans are?

This is exactly what he is bitching about it. He doesn't want to be associated with a "hippie" scene.

Why do you care what people call the music you enjoy?

Of course. If you think all jam bands are like Phish then Mogwai isn't a jam band. But if you know what a jam band is then you realize they are.

Phish, widespread panic, string cheese... Mogwai. Totally fits.

Well according to your definition of how to put musical acts into genres, if they have rapped on stage before, they are rap groups.

I mean since like Miles Davis and James Brown were members of jam bands and everything.

False. You may want to look into what constitutes a jam band.

Exactly. This is a really stupid argument he's presenting.

No one In their right mind thinks mogwai is a jam band.

So a jam band is one that will "improvise live over various chord patterns and long sets of music that cross genre boundaries" and yet Miles Davis is only jazz?

Clearly you have not listened to very much Miles Davis.

Link me to when Bieber improvised live over various chord patterns and long sets of music and crossed genre boundaries. I'll wait.
