Prince is a given. Singular talent in all aspects of his art. Could play any instrument and kept evolving his music in which he created incredible music across multiple genres (not to mention the songs he wrote for others that were global hits). Plus, he got more arse than a rent-a-center sofa

Who you got? Solo artists only-no bands.

I'd go with:
Prince
Elvis
Michael Jackson
Bon Dylan

Prince
Michael Jackson
Freddie Mercury
Paul McCartney

I'll add a 5th and say Elvis, although he wasn't nearly as talented overall as those listed above, his impact on music culture should get him a spot.

Mercury is a great call. He'd definitely make the short list.

My wife said would ladd Madonna, I said, "no sammich, no Madonna." I just don't think Madonna had the talent to keep up with these guys.

Jimmy Rodgers: He was the very first popular music star,he changed everything. He borrowed from other musicians and wasn't all that original, but he put it all together and made it happen.

Hank Williams; I don't think this one needs explaining.

Buddy Holly: really influenced Rock music later on more than Elvis did.

Bob Dylan: Changed the way that songs were written, the subject matter of popular music that could actually get played on radio. It wasn't all silly love songs anymore.

Jimi Hendrix: No explaining needed here either.

Since you would only have 5 spots,it would have to be these guys.

Freddie Mercury before prince, imo. Freddie is a ridiculously talented vocalist.

1. Elvis. No doubt.
2. Michael Jackson. Easy choice.

3 and 4 are where the discussion begins. I would take Prince and Smokey Robinson.

I would not argue the Beatles, Bob Marley, Hank Williams or even Brian Wison.

First, OP needs to specify that this Mt. Rushmore is for popular music and although the real Mt. Rushmore only has four, we can allow five. Also, a band counts as one.

That being said,

1.) Elvis
2.) The Beatles
3.) Michael Jackson
4.) Prince
5.) Carole King*

*admittedly a sentimental choice; It's too early now, but I fully expect that the Adele juggernaut will continue and she will be up there when it is all said and done.

Wonder how many people in here would say Prince if he didn't die a couple of days ago

That's a great question.

My answer is this:

In the short term, I have him on the 4-person Mt. Rushmore, because, frankly, I can't think of anyone more deserving after Elvis, Beatles, and Michael Jackson. Prince is there mainly because of his music abilities, and not because he was a world wide phenomenon like the other three. That's not to diminish his skill, global influence, and popularity. To be honest, I think he and David Bowie would chuck rocks at a giant sculpture featuring themselves and laugh at the absurdity of it all. After that, they'd go write a killer song.

I've had the opinion for years that Prince was the Mozart of this 50-year-era of music. I've probably posted it here before, but I'm not sure.

In the long term, I think that if say, by the time she's 35 (or God forbid some tragedy befalls her), Adele releases 3 more albums as good as her first three, and she continues the pace of sales and popularity (see: Euro and US tours selling out in minutes), she will be on the 4-person Mt. Rushmore of popular music. It's too early right now. She could easily release a stinker of an album, or damage her voice again, or just decide that she's done and become a recluse like Sade.

Prince is one of the most gifted musicians of all time, I wouldn't really have a problem with it.

It's hard as frick to make a music Mount Rushmore. There are so many I'd want to put on there, not enough space

If it was the musical equivalent of Mt. Rushmore, wouldn't that mean that the artists must be American?

I think a good thread/discussion could be had on which current artists can go down as all time greats.

I'm with you on Adele possibly being remembered and celebrated 40 years from now. I have a few others that come to mind as well.

Chuck berry- created rock as we know it

James brown- the showman of showman

Paul McCartney- defined pop

Hendrix- shitted on everything people thought about guitar. Bonus points for dieing early

Jerry Garcia

I'm going to say no. The Beatles weren't The Beatles until they hit the U.S.

Elvis and Michael Jackson were world wide phenomena. Adele didn't really become more than another British blue-eyed soul sister in the vein of Amy Winehouse and Duffy until she appeared on Saturday Night Live.

Music is too much of a global entity to be strictly limited to the U.S. It transcends political, ethnic, racial, and nationalistic boundaries.

a) more global
b) give you three more spots

I almost included Chuck Berry instead of Buddy Holly, they were about equal influences on 60s Rock, but it seems like Buddy Holly's influence has lasted longer, maybe because he died so young,I don't know.

James Brown was a great showman, but he borrowed heavily from many others

I always felt that Prince combined aspects from Little Richard,James Brown,Jimi Hendrix,Michael Jackson and he made it work.

Like others have said, for music, you would need a whole range of mountains to have enough room for the worthy ones.If you only have 1 mountain,it gets tough.

Brown was super black when a lot of artist were holding back. that attitude carried over to rap
