Here's another one that Cyndi Lauper changed into a big pop ballad and was a huge hit... Jules Shear's version is much more subdued, folkish..

She had a couple more hits off that record that were bigger than the originals... The Brains.. Money Changes Everything and Prince's When U Were Mine..

We seem to have abandoned the "different genre" requirement, so I'll just post this:

Hardly anyone associates the song Red Red Wine with Neil Diamond. Everyone remembers the UB40 reggae version instead.
The absolute worst song I have ever heard in my life. I get irrationally angry when I hear it.

Almost no one under a certain age knows the original:

Folk

They know either or both:

Reggae/blues

Lauper's Money Changes Everything was also a cover of a Brains (Tom Gray) song.

yeah, I mentioned that in the post for All Though the Night...

Many songs on her debut were covers, but she definitely put her stamp on them...

I think there are a few other Dylan songs that fall into this category..

I believe Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower is the version most people associate with that song... I wasn't sure about Mr. Tambourine man... both versions are pretty well known...

Sorry, I missed it.

I think the Money cover is a masterpiece. Yeah, only 4 of 10 of the tracks were originals - Time After Time (cowritten with the Hooters' Rob Hyman - and the main Hooters, Hyman and Bazilian were key instrumentalists on the record. Hyman has the backing vocals on Time After Time as well.), She Bop, Witness and I'll Kiss You.

And the only original hits were Time After Time and She Bop. Even the "title" track was an old jazz age tune (Sherman, Lewis and Silver).

Obviously most people know Hallelujah from Jeff Buckley, John Cale or Shrek, but as one of the most covered songs of the late 20th/early 21st Centuries - the original by Leonard Cohen is typically forgotten by folks (again) under a certain age.

(And Cohen couldn't sing to save his life)

So, here's a link to one of the GOAT covers;

Buckley's Hallelujah

Also more popular than the original:
Thin Lizzy

This is not the original, but one of the first recordings that brought the old Irish folk song to light:
The Dubliners

Yeah, its such a good song.. slightly off topic but Will Johnson/Centro-Matic used to cover it live (not sure if they ever recorded it)... it works slowed down and with a more sparse arrangement too

Ian and Sylvia were absolutely the inspiration for Mitch & Mickey.
