Songs which are somehow better in live local venues than by the original artists

Went to a fundraiser the other night and a small local band was playing. They played Tupelo Honey and it got me to thinking - I've heard this song many times in a lot of local places - nightclubs, wedding receptions, etc. And for some reason I like it even more live than listening to the Van Morrison version (as great as that is).

Are there any songs you feel this way about? Something about the local flavor in a small venue just elevates the song.

Yes. My friend Matt Powell does a really beautiful version of "Feels Like Rain". I love John Hiatt but Matty's rendition blows his out of the water, IMO.

No, not really. New Orleans bands do decent jobs covering The Meters but, nah, I prefer the original.

Matt Powell

Hadn't seen Matt live since he was filling in on lead guitar for Wade Bowen at Fred's 7 or 8 years ago...

During the set, I wrote "Dragonfly" on a sheet of paper and brought it up to the stage...Wade laughed and obliged, made Matt play one of his own songs...

Wade's a good sport. Matt's such a talented guy. I bet he got a kick out of that! He's playing with Brandon Rhyder right now but every Sunday he does an acoustic song swap with George Devore and plays some of his own stuff.
