Songs that could have been better but left too much on the table

Always liked “The Underdog” by Spoon. Very catchy but lacks the umph to be great. Really needs a big instrumental part featuring the brass and a good guitar solo as it is ending.

The Underdog

Divine Hammer by The Breeders. I do not know much about how music is recorded, but that one song always makes me question my treble setting. Something is just not right. If it sounded better, it would be such an awesome song.

Red Hill Mining Town by U2.

Needed more work, just tapers out from the great opening and middle, feels abandoned and lazy out the back end, despite great Bono wailing, especially by U2 and Brian Eno standards. Crappy lyrics.

It's like they were pulling a Westerberg/Mats "F@ck it, let's go have a beer" moment, amongst the all the Joshua Tree excellence..and never finished the job.

I think she just had c@ck on the brain, because the song is just monotone without any real layering, and repetitive lyrics.

And I'm a huge Pixies fan, enjoying some Breeders and Black Francis works.

Whole album is mixed like that.

But it’s still one of my favorites. I remember being amazed that the bassist from Pixies was an identical twin, and got the CD based on “Cannonball”. It doesn’t disappoint, despite the wonky EQ.

Paul Westerberg has put out a lot of songs, in his various projects, that seem about 80-90% finished..

I guess I just don't notice it on Cannonball.
