Animals is basically all Waters, not Gilmour.

Not in my opinion. The amazing guitar work on this album is 100% Gilmour. The whole band played these songs on tour and developed them before recording. I think Dave even played bass on the studio tracks.

Not in your opinion?...

quote:

With the exception of "Dogs" (co-written by Gilmour) the album's five tracks were written enitrely by Waters. The song contains references to Waters' private life; his new romantic interest was Carolyne Anne Christie (married to Rock Scully, manager of the Grateful Dead).[5] Gilmour was distracted by the birth of his first child, and contributed little else towards the songwriting of the album. Similarly, neither Mason nor Wright contributed as much as they had on previous albums, and Animals was the first Pink Floyd album not to contain a composer's credit for Wright.[6] Roger's thing is to dominate, but I am happy to stand up for myself and argue vociferously as to the merits of different pieces of music, which is what I did on Animals. I didn't feel remotely squeezed out of that album. Ninety per cent of the song "Dogs" was mine. That song was almost the whole of one side, so that's half of Animals. “” – David Gilmour, Mojo (2008)[7] The band had discussed employing another guitarist for future tours, and Snowy White was therefore invited into the studio. When Waters and Mason inadvertently erased one of Gilmour's completed guitar solos, White was asked to record a solo on "Pigs on the Wing".

opinion is opinion but it's a waters album. I prefer Gilmour like I prefer Lennon, but Animals is prob his best effort. Dogs is technically half the album so I guess there's that.

I would say Wish You Were Here, but Shine on You Crazy Diamond does not need to be two separate 13-minute tracks.

But that was the point. WYWH is a dedication concept to Syd with SOYCD as the book ends seeming to speak directly to him. I know when they were developing it it was supposed to be similar to Eclipse, but decided that rather than using one whole side like on Meddle they would split the song sort of prolong and epilogue. (I believe that's the right terminology) Anyway that's the story they tell about it.

Waters may have held a heavy hand on Animals & The Wall, but I've read a few interviews & books that state Waters had a difficult time "sharing the wealth" with songwriting credits. Wright deserves a songwriting credit on "Sheep" IMO, because there's no way Roger came up with those awesome keyboard passages. And I've heard both Gilmour & Ezrin claim that The Wall may have been Roger's inspiration, but he had alot of help shaping it into what it became. On the flip side, Gilmour by all accounts was very generous giving songwriting credit on Momentary & Division Bell. Long story short, the "writers" of those later Floyd albums might be a good launching point for discussion, but take it with a grain of salt.

Dark Side had the most iconic cover and some great songs, but Animals is my number one. Although shine on you crazy diamond might be my favorite PF song

I dare say the beginning of 'Speak to me / Breathe' is maybe the most iconic in the PF catalog.

That said, I have listened to 'In the Flesh?' more times than possibly any other song by any artist.

But DSOTM is a masterpiece.
