I was eagerly waiting in anticipation for the follow up to good kid maad city with probably too high of hopes. Since it's come out I've probably given it two or three straight listen throughs and a lot of the songs just from being shuffled in.

But..I have to say. I was pretty highly disappointed. Besides a few songs, I can't really get into it nearly as much as his previous work. Am I way off base here? I don't hear much on the radio or talk about it at all which I assumed was a bad thing.

I thought it was good, but I agree, not as good as the preceding album. Don't know if it flopped financially, however.

According to wikipedia:
quote:

The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 363,000 equivalent album units, selling 324,000 copies in its first week.[45] It also topped the chart its second week with 123,000 units, selling 107,000 copies that week. It was the first album since Taylor Swift's 1989 (2014) and first R&B or hip hop album since Beyoncé's self-titled album (2013) to spend multiple weeks atop the chart.[46] The album has sold 593,000 copies in the US as of June 2015.[47]

To Pimp a Butterfly debuted atop the charts in the United Kingdom,[48] New Zealand[49] and Australia,[50] even after being released midway through the tracking week.

I thought it was good, but I have the feeling I'm not supposed to like it as much as I do. Really wish Kanye would put out another album like all the ones before and including MBDTF, but if not, then I'm happy to support Kendrick so long as he doesn't go "full Kanye".

Agreed. I liked it okay upon the first couple listens and then didn't l listen to for a while. Tried listening to it again today for the first time since and just don't really enjoy it that much.

I really think GKMC was a masterpiece.

It's highly overrated also.

Flop? No

Overrated? Yes.

He is a fantastic rapper but TPAB is an over-stuffed concept album that loses its way like 4 songs in.

There are 3 of so good songs but the rest blew IMO. I love hip-hop and love Kendrick but I was shocked at how bad/ overrated some of the songs were.

I agree with this. First reactions were way too over the top. I like it, don't love it.

I feel like it didn't really start gaining traction until 4 songs in. I'm curious which 3 songs you thought were good.

I think more people who've listened to the album really enjoy it, but the minority is more vocal just because it's much different than GKMC. People who were disappointed typically point to GKMC which suggests they were expecting it as a true follow up rather than being it's own completely separate work and concept. The albums were roughly 3 years apart, it's pretty clear he evolved a lot in that time. FWIW I'm not shitting on anyone having the opinion that the album wasn't good, just my observation as to why some people may have been disappointed.

The problem with TPAB, musically, is illustrated very well by "Alright." I respect the hell out of the art of the song, but it takes FOREVER to get into the actual groove. Huge long intro with a "Lucy" narrative. Then it has a weird chaotic patois style rap for a while. Then it finally sinks into an actual grooveable song. The problem is, you've committed like 2 minutes to the song already at that point. Someone should release an edit of TPAB that trims the fat and narrative and just contains the core grooves. That would be a "fun" party album. As is, TPAB is an excellent work of "art," but it's not something that you want to just throw on and groove to with a bunch of people or in a car.

All that being said, the video for "Alright" is beautiful.

I didn't get my hopes up so I wouldn't consider it a flop. good kid, m.A.A.d city might be top 5 as far as hip hops albums go, so it was almost impossible to make something remotely as good.

It was average to me, I don't think I was a fan of the overall theme the album seemed to have.

Black political concept albums dont exactly appeal to the masses. Critics slobbered over it obviously. But that doesn't translate to mass appeal plenty of the time

I dont think its the worst shite ive ever heard, its just too chaotic of an album for my taste. Which doesn't draw me in enough to give a frick about its themes or messages. If you want to write poetry or a book on the african american life, do it. Most people arent gonna bump that shite around town. Which he probably knew. so he didnt sell out, which is nice
