How's the quality of the sound/experience in this venue? I swore off large arena shows years ago because the experience was so poor--preferring smaller venues instead. Have things changed any in recent years?

I don’t have very much experience with big arena concerts, but I have seen Tool in both Smoothie King Center and Staples Center, and thought the sound was much better at Smoothie King.

That’s all the anecdotal evidence I have

No idea about Smoothie King Center but Staples sounds awful. I won't go to shows there anymore.

I've seen a bunch of packed house concerts there.. Paul McCartney x2, Elton John x2, Billy Joel x2, Eagles x2, Garth Brooks, Van Halen, etc and the sound was fine.

I have seen Tool at SKC as well and thought the sound was great. I have been to a handful of concerts there and sound has never been an issue.

Rush sounded just okay, Clapton sounded great, but when Chappelle was there, some of the comedians were a little difficult to hear.

I think that sometimes with Music you are anticipating the sound so you can identify it easier than words.

I think the sound is great. Trying to remember who all I have seen in that building.

The Police
Van Halen (2)
Lionel Ritchie
Neil Diamond
Duran Duran
Paul McCartney
Katy Perry
NKOTB, SaltNPepa, Debbie Gibson (took the wife)

Roger Waters sounded incredible in there a few years ago. Others haven’t been as impressive. It probably depends on the talents of the sound crew to a certain extent.
