Was listening to Mike Posner perform I Took a Pill in Ibiza the way it was actually written (hint: it's the polar opposite of the EDM club version) and it got me wondering what other songs were like that.

Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Rey comes to mind. Any others?

Mad World by Tears for Fears is kind of the opposite. A sad song that was originally fairly upbeat that got remade by Gary Jules with a more somber mix.

Pat Green and Natalie Maines do a nice, bouncy, upbeat version of Snowin on Raton (Townes van Zandt) on George's Bar. It sounds really good, and is completely out of character with what the song is saying, and how Townes sang it. The lyrics seem sort of upbeat until you pay attention to them, my guess is Pat Green had no idea what the song actually was about.

Red, Red Wine by Neil Diamond is a broken heart song but UB40's reggae version keeps your foot tapping.

If you actually listen to the lyrics of Hey Ya, it’s darker song. The upbeat music kinda takes away from that point

Funny you mention Townes because the first song to come to mind is Pancho & Lefty. I love the Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard version, but Townes had a more emotionally resonate way of singing such a dark outlaw ballad. His live versions reflect the same tone.

The Heartworm Highways DVD release featured him singing his song as well. By the way, the doc has just been rereleased for watching online.

Took a classic sad song...slowed it down and sang it sadder.
Sad song ...gone more sadder

A lot of rock covers would qualify here:

“Land of Confusion”/“Shout” by disturbed
“Lollipop” by framing Hanley
“Born to die” by amity affliction

Just the immediate ones that come to mind

Doesn’t really apply to the OP, but I’m reminded of the time I was working at the campus radio station at AU when London Calling came out and was playing “Train In Vain”. A chirpy sorority girl DJ came in and said “Oooooh, I just love that song, it sounds so happy!”

I’m like, uh, yeah.

IIRC this thread was made for Hanson's "MmmBop"

This was what first came to my mind. The Willie/Haggard version sounds like something off a kid's cowboy songs record. The live version on Towne's Rear View Mirror album is one of the saddest things I've heard.

That guy is why I feel there are amazing singers and amazing voices and the two aren't necessarily the same. He could give so much emotion to his words without going into the breathy theatrics of someone like Bono or Adele.
