Which would you rather see live in their respective primes?
I've been listening to both of these guys and watching their concert clips a lot lately and I really appreciate their styles. Their masculine, soulful vocals and robust guitar licks are something I don't see much in music today.
I'm giving the edge to Palmer, dude knew how to put on a great show from what I've seen.

It's kind of an apples and oranges comparison. Palmer was more about being a singer and Huey was more about being a band vocalist and frontman. I'd say the News would be better because of the band dynamic but that's just what I like. But Palmer had a WAY better singing voice.

I've always been under the impression that Palmer composed all parts of his songs and just had an independent crew come in for performances who played his music on their instruments.
I've watched interviews where he talks about figuring out the right sound, for example "I woke up laughing" went through a couple iterations before he rethought the pacing and finally made it the perfect song it is.
If anything I think Lewis is more about just being a singer/frontman whereas Palmer is more of a full-bodied composer.

I'll take Robert Palmer and members of The Meters as his backing band for the win.

Huey Lewis for me. I was a fan of both but listened to a lot more Huey Lewis.

I always crack up watching concert footage from when he played with the Max Weinberg Seven. They get really into it; it'ss pretty clear bands enjoyed playing with him a lot.

I respect Huey but this shouldn't even be a question.

Huey Lewis because...
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

Neither, they were both pretty generic, stale, and lame.

I've posted on other music boards where this gets thrown out there and people will come in and start arguing with it like it's an off the cuff comment. Always makes for some good laughs.

I need to check out some of that. I really liked Max with Conan, he was like having another host.
Relative to this thread, I really just like Palmer's voice more than Huey's. Not a knock on Lewis at all, just my opinion.

Robert Palmer's debut album alone is better than the whole of Huey Newton's output.
Lowell George. Allen Toussaint. The Meters. There's nothing the least bit boring about it.
End of story.

Not many guys can rock out in a three-piece suit.
