Man, this one hurts. What a legend, fortunate enough to have seen him many times.

Sad day. Getting into the “Phil zone” was one of life’s better pleasures.

Man, that is a guy who cannot possibly ever get his due. Guy quietly produced quality night after night after night after night. RIP a true artist.

dead biographer David Browne

LINK

quote:

The late Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, who could be pretty cranky himself about various aspects of the Dead’s world, music, and culture, had no issues acknowledging Lesh’s presence. “Phil is one of the most accomplished instrumentalists in rock & roll,” Hunter told me in an unpublished quote from my 2015 interview with him for Rolling Stone. “Phil is a trained musician who could have expressed himself on any instrument he chose. But bass was what they needed for the band and he learned to play that. I have the most tremendous respect for Phil’s inimitable bass playing. If you take Phil out, you’ve just got the Garcia band, and that’s a whole different thing.”

for whatever reason, the most “Phil” shows in the archive are to my ears in 1971. After Mickey left there was a space to fill in the music and this is where Phil really got amped to fill it.

dicks picks 35 and road trips 1/3 are excellent examples of this. Phil is way high in the mix and just pushing the band all over the place. Very trippy music even when they are playing it straight.

Ive seen Phil more than any member of the band and its not even close. Early 2000s Phil and Friends shows were so good. I was super bummed when i heard the news yesterday.

yes they were, and so was furthur. The music as it turned out didn’t actually need Jerry in order to achieve liftoff…what it needed was Phil.

the TFB shows we watched at the joy most recently were among the best live music I’ve ever enjoyed. Whatever it was that made it Grateful Dead music was never the same without Phil.

I can’t believe he’s actually gone

Joey Russo driving the bus really took furthur to another level imo. Hes just such a different drummer than billy and mickey.

My favorite Phil and Friends show I saw was phil’s 60th bday in Oakland, 3/10/00. The Band was Phil, John Molo (d), Paul Barrere (g), Bill Payne (k), Robben Ford (g), *and Mike Gordon (b).

Opened the show with Mike on bass and Phil on a red strat for Like a Rolling Stone.
