I think Ricky Medlocke played with Skynyrd in their early studio sessions so in one sense he was an original.

This is iffy BUT an argument can be made. I know RVZ's widow has or had some say in the guys using the LS name as long as there was at least 1 original member touring (in the beginning it was 3 original members had to be touring but $$$$$ talks in the end). Whether she'll (if she still has any say in the matter which I believe she does) consider Ricky an original member is up in the air. When they reformed the band with Johnny on lead vocals they had to rename the band for a short time; Lynyrd Skynyrd II.

She may decide to end it once and for all.

RIP co-wrote Simple Man with RVZ. Just that alone puts him in the pantheon.

Legit question: what is his...ethnicity?

Legit question.....who fricking cares?

I consider Artimus to be an “original member” but he’s the only one left other than that one dude that tours with them that quit the band before they got big. Was in Blackfoot, I believe.

Me too. When Pyle and later Steve Gaines joined the band they were just beginning to give a glimpse of what was to come and we all know the tragedy that prevented a great band from possibly being considered America's greatest band.

Saw the Artimus Pyle Band in the parking lot of River Bluff Brewing in 2018. Pyle's band sounded more true to the original LS than the band touring as LS.

He wrote songs and played guitar on the first record. He’s an original member.

Hate to hear of his death. Such a great guitarist in a great band.

Hopefully he and Allen Collins are having a great reunion in Heaven !

He was an original member.

Although he was a California kid, he played on the first album.

Also a great guitarist.

Came up with one of the top five opening guitar licks in rock history…..Sweeeet Home Alabama. Hell yeah! Maybe #1…?

You are right. Ed King, Gary, Allen, and Steve Gaines were all great guitarists !

The addition of Steve Gaines lit a fire under Gary and Allen.

Go on YouTube and check out Steve Gaines old band Crawdad......It was clear that LS was going to the next level after Gaines was added to the three guitar lineup in 1976....I sometimes wonder if the band had continued how long Gaines would have lasted as a member of LS. Gaines could sing like a mutha and his git fiddle playing was top notch.....I think Gaines may have ended up leading his own band again because he was a decent frontman too.
