I saw the Kanye post and some of the discussions about the quality of Christian music in general. In the 1990’s when I was in my 20’s, I didn’t ever listen to Christian music because I thought it was pretty cheesy from a lyrical and musical stand point. I then stumbled across an album from Rich Mullins and was amazed at how well the songs were written. His lyrics are very poetic and do a good job creating images in your mind as you listen to them. Musically his songs range from a few simple instruments to entire orchestras. From a music and composer standpoint, I think his work competes with anyone’s regardless of genre. If you ever watch any old interviews with him you quickly see he fit the stereotype of an artistic deep thinker.
Here are a couple of my favorites. The first is a simple composition of just vocals and piano
If I Stand
The second includes his use of a dulcimer with a full orchestra backing and great use of percussion.

Rich Mullins was the best contemporary Christian artist we've ever seen. He was also one of the very small number of people you could point to as an example of someone who lived out the true essence of Christianity.

Very true, I always lump those two in the same category.

You guys listen to Andrew Peterson? He was deeply inspired by Mullins and in my mind is one of the best Christian songwriters out there currently.

I don’t listen to new music very often. Any particular recommendations from him?

His Christmas album/musical Behold the Lamb of God has been out for 20 years and it's a pretty amazing work of art. It tells the story of Christ's coming starting in the OT and progressively moves to the NT. He has been doing a Christmas tour for 20 years now and sells out The Ryman Auditorium for two nights every December if that tells you of it's quality. It was just now officially released on his label so it is now on all the streaming services.

Rich Mullins was incredible as was Keith Green. There have always been some truly great performers, musicians, and songwriters in the Christian music world but many did not fit into the box typically carved out for christian artists in the last several decades.
Depending on the type of music you like, you could try out a few different artists that may not be quite as well known now. If you like Blues, check out Blind Willie Johnson (if the name sounds familiar it is because some of his music has been covered by others including Led Zepplin - Nobodies Fault but Mine and Taj Mahal, whose cover of John the Revalator was used to open the movie Blues Brother 2000).
Currently, Lauren Daigle is having a really great run crossing over from Christian to Pop with christian music. I'm a bit biased because we know her and she used to sing in the praise and worship team at our church (still does occasionally). I know she at least co-writes her songs, I think the lyrics are hers for sure, her instrument is her voice.
A lot of younger (I'm 57 so that covers a lot of people
) people I know who are Christians looked outside of CCA music to find inspiration for their musical styles so I think a lot of newer music (going back to the 90s and early 2000s) has more musical influence out side of Christian music.

Rich Mullins was an authentic songwriter. He was transparent and vulnerable in his storytelling. That was (and remains) in stark contrast to most “Christian” artists who would rather paint a pretty picture with their words than portray a realistic one.
The comparison to Keith Green is an apt one. One other that is not nearly as well known but who also had (has?) some of that same authenticity in his songwriting is Bob Bennett, particularly on his album Songs from Bright Avenue which is about his divorce and the impact on his family.
While we are talking about CCM check out Randy Stonehill as well. Another one who wasn’t afraid to show how messy real life can be. Check out Chrristmas at Denny’s for a melancholy slice of life.

Mullins is a favorite of mine too. Keith Green too.
Green still gets under my skin and makes me ashamed of my complacency and weak, pale Christianity. Asleep In The Light
Those two of Mullin's you linked are particular favorites of mine. I also really like Mullins cover of an ancient text. Creed
In addition to Mullins and Green, Don Francisco wrote some very good songs back in the 70's and 80's, particularly ballads, where he fleshed out gospel incidents from various participants' perspectives.
A prostitute who approaches and touches Jesus at a prominent Pharisee's home. Beautiful To Me
A thief on a cross viewing The Crucifixion while enduring his own.
Too Small A Price
Probably be remiss if I didn't give these folks from the late 60's/early 70's some recognition. Maybe not their most famous work but a favorite of mine.
2nd Chapter Of Acts-He Loves Me
Great post.
