I just listened to the entire album and forgot what an amazing album this was. They were definitely all masters of their craft. FUNKY!

Take a listen

BSSM was their breakthrough album, no question.

Unfortunately Frusciante bailed in the midst of the following worldwide tour.

I wonder how much his initial departure effected the direction of the music during the '90s.

Do you mean music in general or RHCP music?

Specifically RHCP's material. He's good, but not that impactful.

Are you kidding? Listen to RHCP's albums before Mother's Milk and tell me that it sounds like the same band after that. He is a major reason why the band's sound changed so much.

I meant he's not that significant of a musician to alter the entire landscape of contemporary music. I wasn't discussing his impact on the band itself.

I wholly agree that he is the individual most responsible for their commercial and critical success.

He's probably my favorite musician, but I agree. He doesn't seem to have had too much of an impact.

I'd argue Rick Rubin is. The Chili Peppers were already trending upwards with each album by the time BSSM came out. I'm not discounting John Frusciante's talent or influence, just him being the big reason BSSM was their breakthrough album.

Fantastic album. I havent read the rest of this thread, but I'll go out on a limb and say these three things are covered:

RHCP sucks
Frusciante is shite
RHCP was better before BSSM and everything since is sellout bullshite music

Sometimes you gotta call a spade a spade. I can't believe people are putting BSSM before Mother's Milk, the apex of RHCP's kinetic sound, imo.
