Nick Lowe used to say there was only one rule in recording music...you can't shine shite. Either the performance is there or it's not. But with today's technology (he said this some years ago, too), you can, in fact, shine shite.
If the drummer's lagging, or the singer's off-key, hey, no problem, we'll fix that. I've seen amazing shite done with DAT, making a dumber-than-shite used car dealer sound like a professional on his ads.
