Love that album...it also reminded me of this.

Thought I oughta bare my naked feelings
Thought I oughta tear the curtain down
I held the blade in trembling hands
Prepared to make it but just then the phone rang
I never had the nerve to make the final cut

Powerful and poetic.

Waters was writing the chord structure and vocal melodies too, which is the most important part and why he is credited as the sole songwriter on so many of PF's classics. Technically speaking, Gilmour is a better vocalist and is a better guitarist than Waters is a bassist, but the songwriting is what is critical.

Pink Floyd - Final Cut

Pretty bleak album. Not in my top 2.

Dogs is the best song ever recorded.

Is there a Waters guitar solo in there?

It sounds so...NOT Gilmourish, style wise, yet pure arse-kickery.

I know DG recorded alot of bass lines on some albums, and RW is no slouch on the guit-fiddle himself.

No. Gilmour wrote virtually all the music for Dogs.

In fact, he did the bass parts on Pigs (TDO) and Sheep also on Animals. It was just a little bit prior to Animals - a single track here or there. But, he did a lot on Animals and The Wall.

But just rhythm. Roger ain't playing no solos.

It's a pretty good album, but a step down from The Wall. If PF was slightly more functional as a band, AND Ezrin got involved again like he did for The Wall, then The Final Cut would've probably been a helluva lot better IMO. Ezrin & Gilmour had ALOT more to do with The Wall than Waters leads on, but The Final Cut is definitely Waters' baby entirely....what that means is a matter of opinion, but to me personally, it lacks a certain "something" I'd expect by Pink Floyd, even though it's an OK album.

But I admit, when I saw Brit Floyd two weeks ago, I was pretty jazzed that they played Not Now John as one of their encores

that certain "something" it lacks has a name. It's Richard William Wright.

You're insane. David Gilmour (1978) crushes anything Waters did solo.

I guess if we're trying to take a nap, I can agree.

Top 2 ? It wouldn't touch my top 1000. This record was a bunch of leftover tracks from the wall. Depressing songs with little or no melody bitching about British involvement in the Faulkland Islands. It has moments of brilliant lyrics, but the music is drivel IMHO. A lot like Waters new album is just a soapbox to preach hid disdain for Trump, the Final Cut was his rage @ Thatcher and Reagan. Filthy rich f#$ktards praising socialism isn't my idea of quality rock'n'roll.

Wright not being on it is a disappointment, for sure....but even if he was, I don't think he would've made a big difference. I do like the album overall, but much of it is bordering on spoken-word territory IMO, a far cry from a typically "musical" Floyd album...

Final Cut is my favorite Floyd album. May not be the best, but when it came out, it hit the spot and was on heavy rotation on my turntable for a very long time. The build up on the opening piece always gave me chills. Usually the feelings and memories connected to a piece are more important to me than the objective aesthetic. Ummagumma is second and Animals third. Again Ummagumma brings back some great memories of late night listening sessions in my youth. Objectively, I think Animals is the best in the catalog.
