Pet Sounds is a top 10 album of the 20th Century, at least for Rock. It's fantastic. Smile is also up there.
I can understand criticizing their earlier works - the surf pop stuff. But Pet Sounds was a huge departure from their surf music. If only Brian Wilson could have kept it together longer, we would have seen a more robust Beach Boys catalogue after Pet Sounds (and SMiLE).

I agree
The album was/is vastly overrated.

Certainly not something I would just listen to. I like the Kokomo song but that’s really about it. I guess if I was on a beach somewhere and the had it on in the background at a restaurant it would be fine.
Might be the most immature take I have ever read. Pet Sounds is one of the best works by an American composer ever.

Some baws are too baw to allow Pet Sounds to affect them. My Dad gave it to me when I turned 13 and it changed my life. No kidding.

But they did keep it together. I love Wild Honey, 20/20, Friends, Surfs Up, Holland and Sunflower. They are all great records.

I mean Brian Wilson, as a person keeping it together. He was mostly absent in those later albums, which were good, but imagine what could have been if he would have been healthy enough to at least do most of the writing.

I would say he was mostly there for Wild Honey and Friends. Then for 20/20, Sunflower, and Surf's Up he still contributed a lot. But he was mostly non-existent for Carl and the Passions and Holland. Holland to me is maybe my 2nd favorite BB album though.
Then he came back and made Love You, which is another great album. But after Love You is was basically all over.

I’ll go as far as to say that Pet Sounds is better than any single album the Beatles ever recorded. And I love the Beatles.
