Pavement - Best Indie / Garage Band of the 90's?

I don't see much discussion of Pavement on this board. IMO they were one of the best bands of the 90's and had a great catalog. All of their albums were great, but my favorite is probably Crooked Rain.
After Pavement split, Stephen Malkmus went on to do his own solo work, which also is a great catalog and feels like a continuation of Pavement to me. If you've never listened to his solo work, I'd start with Real Emotional Trash, as it is some of his best work (including Pavement) IMO.

I just downloaded sm's new album, so far so good. Crooked rain, crooked rain is probably my favorite pavement cd. Although, i enoy all their stuff and the evolution they went through as a band.

SM's new album is great. I forgot that he had released it until this past week. I think it's a lot better than Mirror Traffic.

I would definitely say they were one of the best bands of the 90s, regardless of genre. Slanted and Enchanted is my favorite album with Crooked Rain second. Also their EP released between those albums (Watery, Domestic) is killer.

Pavement threads pop up every once in a while. I love them and really like The Jicks stuff too....I dare say Jicks albums are more consistent all the way through. Pavement could get awfully self indulgent. Seen Jicks live a couple of times and they are really good and they have a new album out I haven't listened to yet.
I listened to this Malkmus acoustic set yesterday...pretty good.

For a few years now, Brighten the Corners has been my favorite work by Pavement. Lately, though, Wowee Zowee has been making a push. To me, that one feels the most developed, despite the raw garage band sound. Look at songs like We Dance, AT&T, Give it a Day, and Rattled by the Rush... just prototypical Pavement songs.

they really had a great maturation curve from album to album.
Brighten the Corners is my fave though. "Old to Begin" is a perfect song imo.

there are so many good '90s rock bands — superchunk, silkworm, dinosaur jr., sebadoh, guided by voices
pavement is in there, too. i give their fans a load of grief, but i can't deny crcr's greatness.
to me, 90s rock got so weird in the middle of the decade. i was listening to shudder to think today. i don't know how the fuc that band got on a major label. songs are so weird.

Pavement or Archers of Loaf would be my pick for best 90s indie band. Unless Fugazi counts, but I don't think that's what people are thinking of when they say 90s indie.
I'm a Slanted and Enchanted guy, but I'll go against the grain and say my second favorite record of theirs is Brighten to the Corners. That album does not get enough love. It's great.
ETA: I love to Shudder to Think and I'm stunned anyone would sign a band from Dischord and expect that to go well for them. I think that was a "we can't sign Fugazi" kind of thing.

indie is such a b.s. term. it means anything nowadays. everyone's indie. some arse from buzzfeed will say mumford is indie. they're assholes, not indie. but what's the difference these days, anyways?

Back in the day? Everything.
DIY music meant that is was made and distributed almost entirely outside the mainstream. Bands would record their own records, press them themselves, and distribute them to friendly record stores. It was a complete system independent of the music industry. Thus, the bands were wildly inventive and not beholden to any one market. And fans were intensely loyal to labels, as it was often the only thing you knew about a band when you bought their record. Seeing "Matador" on a record was like a friend vouching for the quality.

This is a great list... Pavement hasnt had the lasting power for me, I think mainly seeing their lackluster reunion tour kind of ruined them for me.

I almost included them, but I was associating the label with a sound
I also was trying to loo at artists that spanned the whole decade, thats why I didnt include Neutral Milk Hotel, Spoon or Modest Mouse, etc...
Yo La Tengo would need to be on the final ballot..
And Slanted Enchanted... yes! but pound for pound, Watery, Domestic EP is their best work to me!
