I knew a guy who worked for ASCAP and he absolutely went to bars in the 80's. The venue had to pay up.

Oh my god my brain still works:

The Musical Collaboration

It began with the duo’s collaboration on the 1983 song, “Say Say Say,” featured on McCartney’s album, Pipes of Peace. The two had earlier collaborated on the song “The Girl Is Mine,” which was the lead single from Jackson’s seminal 1982 record, Thriller.

That’s when McCartney talked to Jackson about investing in music publishing. And Jackson allegedly jokingly replied, “One day, I’ll own your songs.”

Then just two years later on August 14, 1985, Jackson purchased the publishing rights to the majority of the Beatles’ catalog—some 251 songs—for $47 million, outbidding McCartney.

Paul and John were both huge douches just in their own ways. Paul got tired of John’s heroin addiction. John got tired of Paul’s overbearingness. And they both got tired of George becoming such a good songwriter making them have to compete for less album space. John for one left because by the time they got to the end at Abbey Road George had the two best songs on the album and John knew the jig was up in regards to album space. And then George went on to write All Things Must Pass right away.

I see where you're going but like someone else said, this is an oversimplification.

With benefit of so much hindsight, almost everything seems forgivable. I'm actually convinced that Paul and John would be best friends today if Lennon were alive. They would have the perspective of elderly men looking back and marveling at the wonder of boys from the wrong side of the tracks going from obscure, red-ligh-district cover band to possibly the most celebrated artists in the history of the world in a period of ~5 years. What expectations for keeping it together would even be reasonable in that scenario? I would actually say they kept it together to an admirable level.

And as much despicable behavior that John engaged in personally, on a professional level, you really have to respect him for simply not giving in to the establishment.

I have to admit, after always thinking that John was a complete POS a-hole, I was taken aback by how charming, even childlike at times, he was in Get Back. IIRC even during the arguments he was pretty reasonable and fair.

Some good insight here. A lot of places you hear music at have a licensed product they are using.

Whether it’s the JCPenney or the rouses or the watering hole.

I didn’t really think about that before. But they are using some sort of like pay for play system in their locations.

I’m guessing those newer jukeboxes at bars have agreements too.
