Nostalgic trip with The Cure

Watched an episode of "Rock Legends" about The Cure. It was a rush of nostalgia because I didn't realize how many of their songs I knew, and I remember where I was in my life and how it felt when I knew them.
In the 80's, I thought of them as a synth punk band, but a bit more mysterious. But, they could also be great in dance clubs, and their sound was a mood changer.
In the 90's, I remember them in college dorms and bars before grunge hit, and after grunge hit. They had music that fit in both eras.
Robert Smith's creations were much more eclectic than the stigmas his bands have been tagged with over the years.
From the 70's to the 90's, they were just under the surface, with a breakthrough hit every now and then, but they were always there. When you think of "alternative music" it's hard to top what they did for three decades.

I would say The Cure is probably the best “alternative” band of all time.

They were alternative before they was an alternative term.
They were Emo LOOONG before anybody knew what the hell that was. “Cure Girls” were around for a long time. White makeup but not ridiculously white yet and black shirts (2 per week being a Cure shirt) and if they smoked, it was Cloves.

Yep, they were the most mainstream emo group.
I never was really a fan of the Cure. I can see how others might dig em, but they never did it for me.

Some songs, Smith grates on me like fingernails on a chalkboard. And you have to enjoy atmospheric music to dig it.
But, they were incredibly versatile with the number of genres they could meld with over a long span of musical evolution.

Sinking is my favorite from them...it is dark, but melodic.

Indeed, but not their greatest. That is reserved for:

Thank you for answering.
ETA: After listening to the album, "How Soon is Now" is definitely one I remember fondly.
